From the title, it appears you are upgrading from an XJ. What's the story behind that?

I built two sweet XJs over the years, with the current one extremely capable off road. However, I'm completely sold on the LJ with frame, 4-1 transfer case, D44's with electric lockers, and a much better platform to build. I think my XJ is getting jealous, because I've been spending way more time on the Wrangler.

I picked up the XJ a few months back,it has a 4inch lift with newer wrangler rims with bfg tires, not a bad truck at all but after driving it around and thinking about a old friend with a wrangler I've decide to get one I like the idea off no tops lol, plus I think my husky will like it also

I dont know how most other people feel but I'm a sucker for a really nice XJ even if its stock. There is just something about them that I love. I had a 98 on 31s with a little bit of lift and I loved that thing. I plan on getting another XJ that way I can have something bigger to haul things.

Here's my XJ from our spring trip to Moab. I don't usually keep the spare on the roof, but I had gear to haul.

When I was looking for my TJ, I found an XJ with 40k miles on it that was owned by a reputable mechanic. He's a friend of my neighbors and would have given it to me for about 5k, I think it was a 99.

Ended up passing and found my TJ. Its not a decision I regret at all, but sometimes I think back on it wondering what it could have been.

The red XJ shown there is my second Cherokee. I built the first one on 31" tires and a mild 3.5" lift. I've always thought that is the way they should have come from the factory. My second one is built higher, of course, and is locked front and rear and sports a long arm lift and tons of protection. I've driven this one for 6 years on some incredible trails and have been happy with it overall, especially considering the overall price and aftermarket support of the XJ.

That is...until I bought my 2005 LJ Rubicon. I took it on the trail recently and tested out the lockers and 4:1 transfer case. That sold me instantly on the Wrangler and wish I had bought this 10 years ago. If so, it would be lifted and on 35's by now. I do like the cargo space of the XJ, but the frame, wheelbase, reliability, simplicity, feel, and upgradability of the Wrangler LJ is outstanding, and I can't wait to begin building it like a beast.

Now, where did I put that time machine?
