Front and Rear lockers!

Hey guys,
I'm looking to get front and rear lockers for my TJ. I have D30 and D35 axles. What type of locker do you guys like or recommend? And any other info about them will be appreciated.

I've got a lot of snow where i live and i would like to take some trips to the sand dunes and when winter comes around, do some snowy trails to. And i think the lockers will help me through that stuff, Right?

I don't have any experience with lockers but from what I've heard I've already decided on the lockers that I'm getting

Factory trutrac in back and just put in an ARB locker in front. I hope this combo works out it should for me I do not do rock climbing.

Most people don't recommend installing a full locker into a D35 due to its inherent weakness.

I have run Lock rights, detroits and ARB's.. Locked is locked.. All did fine. However the control over on and off with the ARB's was great. As stated do not put a locker in a dana 35 unless you upgrade the shafts to 30 spline.

Make sure that 30 spline kit is the real thing, the Super 35 kit as made by Superior Axle. There are a lot of cheap imported imitators out there.

Since you drive on icy/snowy surfaces, avoid any automatic lockers in the rear. You want a selectable and the only one I will recommend is the ARB Air Locker. Eaton's E-Locker has had problems, their post-sales support has been giving fits to at least one guy I know well who ened up switching to an ARB, and it looks like Eaton may be looking to get out of the locker business. I wouldn't consider an Ox Locker if it were for my Jeep.

For the front, if you need 4x4 to get around in the winter, again avoid any automatic lockers like the Aussie, Lockright, No-Slip, or EZ-Locker. None of those are good on the street once you select 4x4. For those conditions, I'd again go for the ARB Air Locker. And trust me, an automatic locker on a sloping trail (off-camber) is NO fun at all. Many call automatic lockers "low-side finders" for their propensity to slide sideways down towards the low side when the trail is off-camber and click from ice or snow. In those conditions, no locker or an unlocked selectable locker is the way to go.

One completely necessary example: Say you're rock crawling, and one rear tire and one front tire comes completely off the ground, all the drive power goes to those wheels and you don't move, with lockers the power gets locked to both wheels and the wheel thats on the ground will start to move along with the tire thats up in the air

Personally, I think I'll be getting front and rear TruTrac limited slip differentials. They are full case, gear driven, with no clutch plates to wear out so they don't require an additive in the oil. Less stress on the axles, good in winter driving (I live in Cleveland) and near locker like performance off road when conditions merit, unless you are doing a lot of rock crawling. And I can get both for the price of an ARB.

I realize it's not exactly what you asked, but it's something else to consider. Could save you some money for other mods.

Just making sure your YJ's rear Dana 35c is a non c-clip axle, they went to a c-clip in 1990 or thereabouts. The Alloy USA shafts on that page you gave the link to won't fit a '90 or newer Dana 35c that has c-clips.

Personally, having run Alloy USA in the past and seeing them break on the trail (albeit very tough trail conditions), I still don't consider Alloy USA's imported axle shafts the real deal when compared to Superior Axle's Evolution Series U.S.-made axle shafts.

I just replaced my stolen '97 TJ with an '04 that has 30 spline Superior Axle shafts up front and 30 spline (Dana 44) Alloy USA in the rear. As soon as my bank account can take the hit, I will be replacing the Alloy USA rear shafts with Evolution Series from Superior Axle & carrying the Alloy USA shafts as spares.

I was actually wondering if I had a D35C or not, I'm happy I don't.

Wooh hoo 1989 and I want to get the superior axle axles but I don't want to buy the kit with the diff, is there a way to buy just the axles

All YJs came with Dana 35c axles in the rear, so your has been swapped? Incidentally, in case I misunderstood you, even the 1989 and older non c-clip axles are still considered Dana 35c axles. The little 'c' stands for Custom, not c-clip.

I'm not sure if Superior sells 30 spline axle shafts for the older non c-clip Dana 35c or not. Contact a buddy of mine who is a Superior Axle dealer & tell him I sent you, he can find out. His name is Gerald Lee and he can be emailed at ... whoops I will PM it to you, I don't want him getting his email picked up by bot web crawlers.

Spill the beans man, I still don't really know for sure if your rear Dana 35c is stock or not and whether it has c-clips or not. What model year is your YJ and is the rear axle the same one the factory installed?

Well I'm pretty sure its still the factory axle, and I have no idea how to tell if it has c-clips, even if I took off the diff cover I couldn't tell

Please don't tell me that you consider your YJ's model year to be top-secret, I still can't figure out what year YJ you have.

Edit: Never mind, I finally confirmed it's an '89 which does not have c-clips. So while that Alloy USA axle shaft kit you found would work, tell Gerald you have a non c-clip '89 Dana 35c and see if Superior Axle sells a non-c-clip 30 spline Evolution Series axle shaft for it.

If you pull off the diff cover, you can see the c-clips. In fact, to pull your axles, you have to pull the cover and remove the clips.

Ok... Wow that is a lot to take in.
So what some of you guys said, I should upgrade to a 30 Spline in the rear before getting a locker.
What would happen if I don't? And how much is that? Is it worth buying the spline, or should I just upgrade my axles?

The standard axle shafts used in the Dana 35c axle are unhardened (plain carbon steel) 27 spline and installing a locker into the stock Dana 35c axle is guaranteed to break the axle shafts. No, it's not ok to just drive "carefully" on a locked Dana 35c until it breaks because when it breaks, you'll be on the trail with others who will be faced with staying with you to help get you out of there.

A Super 35 kit or the c-clip eliminator kit from Superior Axle would allow you to run a locker and up to about the 35" tire size without much risk of breakage. I would not trust any brand beside Superior Axle for this kind of upgrade.

A better upgrade would be to entirely replace the rear axle with a used Dana 44 out of a Wrangler TJ which could probably be found for $600-800 but they are not real common. You would still need to add a locker which would bring the cost up to $1200-1400.

You'll hear some recommending you install a Ford 8.8 axle instead but there's more work to that since you'd have to have TJ brackets welded onto it so it could be installed. 8.8 axles are inexpensive to buy but they don't end up so inexpensive by the time it's all done.

As You can probably tell, i am new to the locker thing, but i am looking for a locker to turn on and off when i want to. Is there something like that out there?
Because i will only need it really for the winter. Whats a Posi lock?

And one last question, when in 4 wheel drive, is it a true 4 wheel drive?

Been a while since I was upside down......in fact....only my daughter has been upside down in my Jeep. Of course, I have been known to let it "take a nap" every once in a while. Pretty stable now with the D60s though. Lot more unsprung weight to help it stick.

First, try reading this somewhat wordy explanation I wrote several years ago about lockers... What? Why do I need a locker? I thought I had 4WD!. Ok so it isn't "somewhat" wordy, it is just plain wordy.

Yes there are lockers that can be turned on and off. The only one I recommend is made by ARB which is the ARB Air Locker. A Posi-Lock is not used on a TJ, it is only for YJs and its job is to replace the YJ's troublesome vacuum actuated front axle disconnect with a cable actuated system.
