Front Driveshaft noise?

I have a 2000 wrangler sport with a 5 speed. the jeep is stock other then a cold air intake and possibly injectors. when at low speeds or taking off there is what i guess you could call a rattle in the front end. when i got the jeep a few months ago i had it all checked out by a mechanic and he said all of the u joints and everything else were ok. also my friend has a tj like mine and he said that he had the same noise when he heard it and it stopped when he took his front drive shaft out. i would do this but i would much rather be able to have 4 wheel drive if i need it. also when i put it in 4 wheel drive the noise stops. If anyone has any idea on how i could fix this or even just tell me what it is i would greatly appreciate it.

Pull the driveshaft out and see if that eliminates the noise. If it does, then chances are you either have a bad U-Joint or Center Ball. Center Ball going bad usually creates more of a chirping noise that has been dubbed "angry sparrows" at slow speeds. By pulling the shaft at least you can narrow the issue and determine if the DS is the culprit and if so, either have it rebuilt/balanced or buy a new one.

It is probably one of two things:
Front drive shaft U Joints. This is usually called the "Angry Sparrows" because it sounds like birds chirping. Taking the front drive shaft out and driving around will let you know if that is actually the problem.

The other is your T case shifter. When the noise happens grab your 4WD shifter and see if that makes the noise stop. If it does there is a t case shifter update kit from the dealership for like $20. That was my problem. It will come with a bunch of stuff but all you really need to do is change the mounting part and put the rubber boot on it.

Drive shaft noise

Your problem sounds like the center ball in the drive line has been running dry. They chirp or even vibrate under this condition.
Try spraying some liquid lubricant into the joint and then run it a while. Sometimes, if it's not too far gone, this will temporarily stop the noise and will confirm your problem. This will make a mess under your rig, but to "Know" what your problem is will be worth a little cleanup.

x2

I end up tearing mine apart every few months if I do a lot of offroading and clean it out and re grease. Mud destroys the cv kit (the center ball mentioned) and it will create a lot of play. And that is what causes the noise. Could very well be any of your ujoints also as mentioned - the cv has been way more common of a noise maker for me so far however.

If you think that may be your issue here is a link that may help explain that area: http://www.stu-offroad.com/axle/driv...iveshaft-6.htm
