Front License Plate

How many of you actually have your front license plate on? I've gone 3 years without it and never had one incident with the police telling me I need to put it on and I find that kind of odd!

Depends where you live. While I was visiting in Texas, my friend was busted while driving. And yes, it was his only offense for being pulled over. Up here in Ohio, they say its mandatory, but I've seen plenty of people who fail to comply.

CA cops dont seem to care but I did get a parking ticket in LA once for "failure to display front license plate" $25 whatever...... Here in OR everyone runs them so I assume the cops care so I have mine on there....

I have mine mounted on maglite clips that attach to the roller fairlead. It fits nicely under my seat for when I go offroad.

I "forget" to put it back on all the time. I have never been stopped. It's been under the seat since last summer.

But if I do, I have the story and the plate readily available.

If you don't want to be stopped, then put it on. Without it you are always in violation and could be stopped for that reason alone.

The less attention the better... my opinion.

Looking at your choice of user name, I think I will take that advise.

Thank-you!

Well in South Dakota it's illegal and I've seen/heard people getting pulled over without a front plate on.

I always make sure I have a front plate here in Texas, why risk getting pulled over for no plate when I just opened a beer!?

Not only does it depend on the state you reside, but more importantly the state your Jeep is registered. None of my vehicles sport a front license plate, then again, all of my vehicles are registered in another state that does not enforce it. I guess I am lucky. The only time I ever got stopped for no front license plate was (of all places) Germany. Go figure. I told them I had no front bracket and they said "It is law here in Germany" and let me go. What could they do? I was an American Soldier. Writing a ticket would be useless for such a "crime". Hahaha

And thats why I run mine up front. I was pulled over by a very nice man with the OSP who informed me that the reason he stopped me was because my windshield lights were uncovered and more than 54 inches off the ground. Then we talked about my front fenders being too small and my lack of rear fenders altogether. Which brought us to what I felt was the real issue, my CA plates. How long you been in OR sir, oh bought 8 months now, really why no OR tags? Oh I replied I havent had the money, it runs almost 300 bucks for OR tags now. Oh ok he says and goes back to his car. Comes back with a lovely printed ticket. $140 fine for failure to register in a timely fashion and a warning for everything else. Moved my lights down to the bumper, got my OR tags paid up. That was 3 months ago, everything else is still the same,I see him on the road now and again hasnt pulled me over since.......Nicest cop that ever pulled me over though gotta say that!

I didn't run one for about a week cause I caught my winch hook on it and bent it to hell. Well my friend who is a cop stopped by one day and told me to put it back on.

I'm registered in NJ but live mostly in PA. Since NJ is a tag-state, my front plate is held on by none other than zip-ties on the grill it's also beat to hell from getting into an accident. It looks like hell, but I have to get a crack out of it every time I get my EZ-Pass violation notice with a beautiful front picture of her.

I have mine mounted on my front bumper...I drive our work Jeep all the time and never get stopped (they won't do anything anyway once they see the dealer tag on the back), but I've been pulled over for it before in my old truck.

It was actually a funny story...I took it off because I wanted my truck to look cooler. I drove like that for 2-3 years with no issues. I always kept it attached to the bracket and stored it behind my passenger seat. One day my dad came home bitching up a storm because he got pulled over for no front plate on his Mustang Mach 1. He was pissed off because the cop gave him a warning "this time" but would ticket him if he caught him again in the future...and my dad was NOT happy about drilling holes in the front air dam of his baby for a stupid license plate. I of course had to laugh and make fun of him..."HAHAHAHA!!!!!! Sucks to be you! I've been driving without mine for years and have yet to have anyone pull me over for it!"

The next day....

Flashing lights in my mirror...cop pulls me over. I stop and ask what the problem is as I was almost positive I was doing the speed limit when I passed him (maybe 3-5mph over) and I was wearing my seatbelt which was a rarity. He asks if I'm aware of the law regarding front license plates. I said, "Yes sir...my bracket pulled out of the bumper and I just haven't had a chance to pick up some new screws to reattach it," and offered to show him the bracket with the plate attached if he wanted proof. He said, that was okay...just fix it asap and asked for my license to make sure everything checked out okay. I hand him my license and he goes, "Blackshire....??? How many Blackshire's do I have to pull over for front license plates in this town?!" I act confused....he's like, "I just pulled your dad over yesterday for the same reason!" and I'm just like, "No sh*t?! Wow...he'll get a kick out of this then!" He laughed...asked if I was under my dad's policy which he'd already verified the day before...handed my license back and reminded me to get it fixed before they catch me again.

I put it on 10 minutes later when I got to my destination...lol.

Anyway...I think it's a really dumb law, but it is the law and I have had a run in with the police dept about it once before and don't care to get pulled over for it again so I just comply with it.

We have to display ours.
When I put a new bumper/bug guard on I had to drill & tap 1/4-20 holes for mine.
Fits tight & flat so it won't crush when I bump things.

Mine didnt have one on when I bought mine. It has a tube bumper up front with no bracket to mount it. Im not a fan of the bumper and plane to replace it but I guess I have to do something temporary since we have to have them in VA.

I would rather have the stock bumper than the one I have ,its just to much.

Will a JK bumper fit my LJ ? I like the ones with fog lights in them. I guess Im getting off the subject LOL

I have been struggling with this since I bought my jeep a few months ago. There was no front bumper on it so I zipped tied it to the front. I have since bought a front bumper but again, no place for it. I don't like the way it looks zipped tied to this new bumper so I haven't put it back on there. The PO said they hadn't had it on it for years, just threw it under the front seat and never got a ticket. I don't like playing with the chance of getting pulled over for not having it but I don't really understand the point.

If a cop pulls you over the always get behind you so they can see the plate and run it. I have also heard in Texas they made some mistake in the law whereas they didn't define a fine or removed that section for not displaying a front plate. Something like they couldn't fix it until the next legislative session unless ol Rick Perry called them back to fix it. So, technically they can give you a ticket but you can fight it and not pay.

I think the first time my dad went offroading with the Jeep in 2001 the license plate was pretty much destroyed. Since then it has never had a license plate on the front, the replacement one is somewhere in the garage. In the 3 years I the Jeep has been mine I've never been pulled over or gotten a ticket.

Around here cops don't care, it's the meter maids that will get you because they have nothing better to do. My parent's always get a ticket on the Mercedes for no front plate when we go out to dinner or something in Boulder or Denver.

I have one on the front of my Jeep as it is required, but I have hit so many rocks in Moab that you really cannot tell what the letters and numbers are. At least something is there even though you can't see it.

I never have mine on, and have never been Stopped for it.

But...if your State Requires it, and you don't have it Installed, that's all the Reason they need to Pull you Over.

It does. Very much so fall under fictitious plates and depending on the state that's an arrest able offense.

I think in Texas you wont get a ticket if you have a hand gun or two in your jeep. I think its the law. must be 45 cal or larger, cause Texas is awesome.

Really though ,I dont see the point either. If they pull you over or are chasing you they are behind you. Looks like a lot of us are going by the 'asking for forgivness rather than permision rule' .LOL I dont think that will work with the LEO.
