Front/Rear Bumpers & Winch Discussion. What are your thoughts?

Ladies & Gentlemen,
I am attempting to purchase new Front and Rear bumpers and a winch for my 98 TJ. There is a place here in the town i am working at that is exclusive to Jeeps and Jeep Builds. We went over pricing and options. Rugged ridge is what they wanted to sell me. I looked at the XHD Bumpers, which is more my style. They also showed me the TJM Winch. 9k lbs and synthetic cable. The price is up there (which I found I can save $500 shopping online myself) but i keep hearing horrible things about Rugged Ridge. I don't take her off road often (besides working on the pipeline R.O.W. but I do go into fields for hunting and the beach. The point being, when I need the winch to work, it MUST work. Also, the tube bumper i bought for the rear seemed to be made of PVC and painted black (not literally) because just carrying a 45 QT Yeti on my rack on I-10 broke the weld on the receiver hitch and folded the piping on the back where the rear weld comes into the piping. What are your thoughts on Rugged Ridge (Bumpers and winches), TJM winches, and Smittybuilt Winches. Also, The Vendor Spotlight Section of WF; What about JCR Offroad's bumpers? These arent the ones I'm looking specifically at, just the ones i have come across. Thanks!

I bought smittybuilt bumpers for my JK. I do like their quality. As far as winch I have a 11.5K quadratec. I have a friend who has a farm that abuses his quadratec. Was impressed with it in action. When checking reviews and stats just further impressed me. Considering what you will use it for I would go as big as possible. Not really a big jump in $$$ to go with more lbs.

That's my attitude too, my winch isn't there for decoration or the cool factor. For that reason, I'll only run Warn and that doesn't mean you have to spend big $$$, you can get an American-made Warn M8000 very reasonably priced all over the Internet. The other brands mentioned in this thread are all made in China.

I've had Rugged Ridge XHD bumper with a stinger on my 07 JK Unlimited for the better part of 3+ years and it worked great! Put it through it's paces several times in Colorado and Moab and never had any issue with the welds giving out or anything breaking on the bumper. As with any product, you'll always have some people that's had good luck with it and others that haven't. I've never used RR winches - I personally ran a Superwinch LP10000 on my JKU and never had any complaints with it either. Granted that Superwinch is "designed" in the US, but built overseas in China, but they still had rave reviews. I know several people that I wheeled with that used Smittybilt and Mile Marker winches with good results as well. Warn has been by far the more popular winch of choice for many years, but the newer Warn winches are ALSO made in China. The M8000 winch Jerry mentioned is a great winch that has a long reputation for being reliable and inexpensive. If you'd like to buy an American winch, I think the other option to consdier would be Ramsey. In the end, it'll boil down to your personal preference and budget. You definitely don't want to skimp on a winch but inexpensive doesn't always equate to poor quality.

Thanks, Wingit. I guess from what i hear, the Smittybuilt = Rugged Ridge (probably because theyre both made in the same warehouse. I found the RR front stubby, RR 11k winch with synthetic cable and RR rear bumper for $1100

Sorry, guys. I didn't catch the replies. I know WARN is top of the line out there. Is there anything at a more reasonable price that is still reliable? I just did the 4" lift, new Woody shafts, rims & tires and other minor things and with the bumpers & winch now, I would like to slow down on the money hemorrhage.

Look at the Superwinch LP10000. I picked it up brand new on amazon about 3 years or so ago for $400 shipped. I've seen them go as low as around $375 at times, or you could get a Superwinch LP8500 for around $299 shipped.

Recommend Warn. Still under $500 for VR8000 model, & it works when you need it. Save your money elsewhere, not on the winch. IMO at least.

I have Warn and never had to use it. Lucky for me. I also know lots of guys go off-road allot and maybe used it twice if that. So if you are in tight budget and don't plan on doing hard core off-road just buy Harbor fright special Badland wench. Approx. $250 with coupon 25percent off. I heard from guys who have them like it for the price.

If you are going to go inexpensive Chinese winch, the Engo 9000 is a decent buy. Slightly more than a Badlands, but deals are out there on eBay

I have a warn m8000 its always worked. Last time I used it I pulled a ford F150 crew cab short box 4x4 out of the mud. He had slid off the trail and was barrier up yo both front and rear axels. The winch never slowed down pulling that rig back up the bank. Warn winch because you can't afford less. IMHO.
