Front Sway bar question

On my TJ I have been having this pesky clunking sound while accelerating and hitting misc. bumps in the road. I just realized my front sway bar has some play in it while parked in the garage. (I can kind of jiggle it at the bushing mounts) I imagine this isn't supposed to happen?

Also, yesterday I was trying to drive up a steep iced driveway from our feild (in 4wd) and when I started to loose traction the front end would violently hop. Could this be a result of the same sway bar issue?

The mounts on the stock sway bar end links are notoroius for going out. They do make a clunking noise as the front suspension tries to stay straight. It could make that hopping when it looses traction. You can always buy some aftermarket ones to replace the stock ones or just fab up some by your self.

I think I just found my issue. The driver side end link seems to be bad.. if I have my hand on the link mount, and bounce the suspension I can feel it lift up a bit. Also, I tried the same test on the passanger side and it did not move at all. Problem found I believe!

The question comes about, Im going to be upgrading my suspension soon (2in lift or so, nothing big) and was curious to know if I will need longer links and if I should wait untill I do the suspension? It would be silly to do it twice.

I've had a broken link before. There is a ball joint inside a small boot that can break. Can get a replacement for about $20. The upper joint can be a pain to get out - I believe it is a tapered bolt stud, gets wedged in pretty good. You can get away with stock links for up to 2" lift. What I have done instead is go with a Rubicon Express Gen II quick disconnect - they come in different lengths and are adjustable (mine are adjustable for 0-2" of lift). About $150 for the set. You could install these now, and readjust length later when you do a lift. But hold off on this for now if you think you'll go more than 2" of lift. I think JKS makes a set of quick discos too.
