I have a friend I wheel with on occasion. He runs a Cherokee (XJ). The more I ride with, and hear the way he speaks of Wranglers, the less respect I have for him.
First of all, he is constantly using our Wrangler quotes and sayings for his Cherokee such as "it's a Jeep thing", and "only in a Jeep", and "way of life" etc. He recently, and other times in the past, has said to me "Wranglers are overrated".
What do I say, or do to get him to understand that owning and driving a Cherokee is no different than any other SUV? Owning and driving a Wrangler is a unique, wonderful, and one of a kind "way of life".

A Cherokee is a Jeep so it is a Jeep thing for him as well. The passion you have for your Wrangler is the same passion he's exhibiting for his Cherokee. I agree with you he shouldn't be speaking ill of Wrangler's just because he's running a Cherokee, but aren't you kind of doing the same thing here? Relax and be happy you've got a friend who wants to get out and off the beaten path with you and has a vehicle capable of doing so.

You are right. I did not mean it in that sense. It proply does sound that way. I guess im just too much of a purist. The terms that are now being adopted by other Jeep owners originated with people using them to describe the origional Willis (wrangler style) Jeeps. Its just, if you knew the person, he has complete disregard for the Legacy. Owning a Wrangler means alot to me, and has positively changed my life :) Now I think about it, his was the wrong thread for me to start. Its just personal, and I am sorry.
Oh, and...he also owns a Wrangler (he got from me) and I own a Cherokee(I got from him) lol

Now that's a good one right there. :) The Wrangler club I'm in has the Wrangler vs. Cherokee argument frequently (semi-good naturedly). You have to own a Wrangler to be in the club but you can bring whatever you want to wheel so we have some Cherokees that come out. Everybody has a chance to get off the pavement and have a good time.

Lol. No no. Not writing anyone off. I love all Jeeps (i own a tj wrangler and an xj cherokee) and he's a good guy. Just would like him to understand the history and the legacy of Jeep vehicles. He just needs to understand that the "Wrangler" style (willis/cj/tj/jk/etc.) Jeeps take authority over all others. They are the original. :)
