Fuel Gauge Inoperable at times

Posted this in another forum but didn't get any responses. I hope to have better luck here.
I am having a recurring issue with my fuel gauge. Sometimes when I start my rig the fuel gauge will stay at E and the low fuel light comes on. When I turn the Jeep off and later start it up, the gauge works fine. There is no consistency to when it happens. Any thoughts??? Could it possibly be a sending unit or a short in the wiring?

Could be either. Start at gauge and work your way back to the tank and see what you find. Also find out what else is on the same circut and see if it works properly when the guage acts up. It will give you a better idea if its the sending unit or some other electrical fault. Good luck

Two additional thoughts:
Could be a poor or loose ground...
Check to be sure the fuse is seated well in its block.

I hate intermitent issues...perfer a complete failure so the fault can be clearly found...good luck.
