Fuel pump?

I was running down the highway yesterday passing a car when my jeep just died. It was just like I reached up and shut the key off. Never sputtered or anything. When I tried to fire it back up it would sputter for a split second and die. I am going to check the fuel pressure today but yesterday when I pushed the needle in on the fuel rail it didnt seem to have much pressure at all. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but my fuel gauge quit 2 days ago. Filled up at the gas station and gauge wouldnt go above 1/2 tank then by the end of the day it was showing empty. Could this be a bad fuel pump or this pressure switch Ive been reading about? This is on a 97 wrangler sahara 4.0

Check fuel pressure should be I think between 40-50 lbs. And it should not drop in 15 minutes. My friend just had to replace his. The pressure went to 50 then dropped to 15 in 3 minutes. He ended up hitting his tank off a big rock, and broke his fuel pump inside the tank. But it still worked as long as he didn't rug it. Lol

Sounds like a bad fuel pump to me. Even without testing fuel pressure when you push that valve on the fuel rail it should spray fuel every where. Get a oem pump from the dealer. I learned the hard way buying an autozone pump just to have it fail again.

Should I just buy the pump or do I have to buy the whole sending unit?

Got it home this afternoon and it fired right up. I wonder how long it will last.

You can only buy the whole assembly. And it won't last long, just change it before you tow it. Lol

An easy check for a bad fuel pump is to pour a little fuel in the throttle body and start it up. If it runs for a few seconds you have your answer. You can also pull the fuel line off the rail at the disconnect and put it in a water bottle and have someone crank it. If fuel come out the pump is working and then it's more than likely the pump regulator (the silver piece on top of the pump)
