ah the gas tank question. I have come to the conclusion that all Wrangler gas tanks are completely different as no two ever fill up or empty themselves teh same. Mine, although a 15 gallon tank, will only hold 12 gallons whne the needle is pegged at the bottom and I have been driving for a day with the gas light on. However, apparently you can convert the tank to a 19.5 gallon tank with a simple modification and at the same time change the postion of the fuel indicator to show empty when you are actually somwhere in the neighborhood of actually being empty.

I must be a lucky one, my 97 tj is dead on balls accurate when it comes to the gas gauge.....although, now i've jinxed myself.....
From what i've found the rims are diff from 97 on, the older ones won't fit. I do have a set (5) off a 04 unlimited for sale if your looking for rims and tires.

I have to fill mine up with the nozzle sticking 60% out or it just keeps clicking and wont fill. I went from empty to full today and it was just about 15 (i think)gallons, bout 50$

Its funny i went a little into the red on the fuel gauge, turned the car off then when i turned it on again the needle refused to move off dead empty until I filled it.

Have you looked under your Jeep's gas tank to see if it has been dented/pushed up in the middle? I know a couple of guys that set the rear end of their TJs down on a rock hard enough to change the capacity of the gas tank.

The bolt pattern on your TJ is 5 on 4.5". It has the same bolt pattern as the YJ (1988-1995), and the XJ (1984-2001?) for sure, and I believe that some of the Grand Cherokees had the same pattern as well, but I am not sure.

Jeeperman is right on about the wheels and checkin the tank for a dent. Just for those who may be new and not remember this debate from before... 97 to i believe it was 99 the standard tank was a 15 gallon tank. The 19.5 gallon tank was an option you had to pay for. The irony is that the two tanks are identical, the filler hose is what was different. The 15 gallon tank had a longer filler hose and cutoff hose. So essentially you have a 19 gallon tank in your jeep and if you were willing to give Chrysler money they would remove some hose for you (pay more money to get less raw material.. what a genius way to make money) and let you use the full 19 gallons.

If you frop teh tank and cut the hose you will have teh full 19 gallon tank useage.

I have a 2000 wrangler that i have never been able to put in more than 15.5-16 gallons even when the guage reads at the bottom of the red. Crawled under jeep and found the part # off of the tank. Says it is a 19 gallon tank no dents, filler and vent hose on mine ar molded or welded to the tank. I think i saw a link for this i will search.

Here is the link.. http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/fuel/15to20gal/
Seems entirely possible that it was just to easy to keep up with the tank scam on the later models!

I was told they standardized the 4.0L with the 19 gallon tank in 2000.

i think you can get it past 3/4 full, its jsut taht jeep tanks are weird adn the pump will shut off ometimes, you just have to know that you can take about 13 gallons when the light turns on and 15 when its all the way over empty, so even if the pump shuts offre positiopn the nozzle and start it again it may go for 5 more gallons!

Josh is right... in 2000 all 4.0 models have the 19.5 gallon tank. If you have a 19.5 gallon tank, your tank usually is pegged below the red arch and the E when yu actually have about 3-4 galons of gas left in the tank. Hence the 15 gallon fillups. Mine only holds about 12 gallons when completely empty below the red arch. This is because the sending unit has two positions. You can actually lower it into the tank to me more accurate.

I have my theories as to why they did this. The normal car is designed to give you 30 miles of driving once the light comes on. However thopse cars usually are not offroad 50 miles from civilization. Therefore they set it to what would be in most cases a reserve of 45-50 miles once the gas light comes on. Giving you time to find fuel before being stranded offroad somewhere.

but again that is just my theory.

15 Gallons = $50 !!!!!!!
I got 15 gallons for about $ 38 or 40 no more.
My Jeep has the 19.5 gallons tank. I never put more than half o 3/4 of the tank unless I really need it.
Fuel prices are insane now!!!!!
My Pathfinder(3.5L V6) its giving me better mpg than the Jeep. Thats the one we use on weekends if there is no Off Roading.

I'd assume you have the 4 banger? Vs are more economical than the Is since naturally they are more rev friendlier because of lighter cranks (+ much lighter overall engine weight) so they lack low end torque but are better for higher rpms... If you drive it nicely in the lower rpm you will obviously get better mpg than a I that makes much more torque in the low end.

Just in case you want to get back at me thinking "what about v8s" well compare a V8 to an I8..

3.19 here for 87 last month it was about 3.50 to 4 bucks in the city making chicagos gas prices some of the highest in the country (according to fox news).

Same thing here my last car was a 5th gen 2000 Honda Prelude and the H-22 takes only 93 , also a rminder note @ the tachimeter "Premium Unleaded Only".

Now I use the cheapest fuel available for the jeep, and no problems at al.

hahahaha also the Pathfinder has more aerodinamics hahahahha.
Here in Tampa there is a lot of long bridges and causeways over the bay and with these winds the Jeep gets worse mpg!!!!

billbill I too have the same problem when my fuel light comes on I go fill-up with around 12 gallons and the gas gauge only goes to 3/4. I have never tried driving much passed the fuel light coming on. Just might try it after it warms up.
