gas mileage

well i bought my jeep about 3 months ago, it is the 97 wrangler SE 4 cyl, 5 spd, when i bought it, it had only 82,000 miles on it, and i bought it from its second owner who only owned it for 2 months and didnt like it ( too small for him and it rode too rough), and the first owner bought it new and towed it behind a RV back and fouth the florida from oaklahoma every year for 8 year, well i brought it home and changed the air filter, oil, oil filter, spark plugs, and cap & roter. but after all this i am only getting about 14-15 MPG on a 4 cyl, is this normal for a jeep or is something wrong, so far i think it might be the barrings, but havent had the time or money to replace, if any one has suggestions or advice on things to change or check it would be greatly appeciated.

Good luck on improving the gas mileage much more than that I am in the same boat, but you have to remember you are driving a brick or driving a kite if it is windy. There is much discussion on intakes, cat backs and headers; most of which says not much will help. If you plan on lifting etc. that will affect gas mileage as well. Gearing may help but not a whole lot. Good luck in your mileage quest I just deal with the 13 or so mpg. Sorry I could not be of more help.

with my 4-banger and 30x9.50's, i get between 16-20 depending on where i go(highway or city). i've got a k&n filter and 4.0L throttle body...8mm wires, new cap and rotor, headers, and exhaust are all in the garage to get added. the biggest thing that'll help your mileage is to stay light on the skinny pedal. your jeep wasn't meant to go fast, so accelerate slowly. i also don't run but 60-65 on the highway.

It's never going to be like a 4cyl economy import. Besides going on almost twice the wieght of an import you also have way bigger tires, 4wd, no areodynamics, and an engine designed for high torque not economy. Sorry but we don't drive Jeeps for that reason. I think that the 6cyl actually gets better milage than the 4.

ok well i didnt know if it is normal or not, the only reason i asked is because i have a 96 bronco,v8, auto, 4WD, no lift(yet), and 33x11.50r15 tires. and it gets about 17-18 MPH. but i thanks for the advice thus far. i guess i have a few ideas to get started.

My 4 banger gets 22mpg highway, 15 city (gps verified) on 33"s and stock gearing (I used my OD a good bit) - not bad; the key is to be consistent in your driving speed; you need to find the speed at which your Jeep naturally wants to cruise. This is not necessarily slower, nor faster - you need to keep it pegged in the optimum power range without going extra high on the revs. I usually keep mine at 2500-3000. Keep it in that range and you're golden - if it's windy, downshift into 4th and keep it there.

holly old post dig up...

If you have bigger than stock tires be sure to change the speedo gear ( if you can) to get the correct mph reading to then get the correct mpg figures. I got 13-14mpg with a 4.0L and 35's and 4.56 gears

i have a 99' 4 cylinder and the addition of an intake helped gas mileage a bit(2-3 mpg), i added a set of 31's and it took it right back to the stock mpg. i just installed a banks exhaust sounds great but didn't give too much power. a lot of people say that it does nothing to add power but 3rd gear has more power than stock after the intake and with the exhaust added some more power to 5th gear, its much easier to pass some one on the highway. the only reason i installed both is because i got a great deal on them. if i had to pay full price for both i wouldn't, i would have spent it on a bigger lift and tires.

i've figured in awrangler lots of the mpg depends on how you drive it. I can get 10 mpg and i can also get above 15 on what used to be my uncorrected speedo. I just put the right gear and am trying to run through my first tank of gas.

exept you can see he is still in drive

I have been thinking of selling my jeep just because of the gas
I will either buy a 4 door (it fits me better having a baby)
or turning to the dark side and getting a toyota tacoma
although the tacoma I will have to do a sas on it so I can run 38's

both vehicals get around 17 city and 20 hwy

taller tires will make your cruizing rpms lower which in my case increased mpg.

is there a big difference in the older jeeps like my 92 and the newer 2000 plus models in mpg?

i gues it really depends on how you drive it. I had 30s and my cruizing rpms would be high as hell. Now with my 35s my cruizing rpms at 60 mph are about 1700-1800rpm

Many go the other way and actually have worse mpg. For some reason others also report having problems keeping speed at that low rpms. I dont know if its because of my mods but my rig holds speed easily.

If you're stock 4banger jeep stan. trans is getting 13 mpg, something is wrong or you're putting the pedal to the floor at every green light. I got well over 20 mpg stock with my auto 4 banger. I think i had around 25 or 26

well I have the taller tires and with my gearing I get better gas milage then I did when I bought the leep

when I bought the jeep I was getting 120-140 per tank full now I get about 180-200 a tank full

I was thinking of finding a doner cherrokee and taking the AW4 transmission tranny computer out so I will have an overdrive transmission

a freind of mine just sold his 03 rubicon but he kept his YJ he was telling me that the YJ gets better milage then the rubicon did

with my 98 4.0 6 cyl manual tranny I get 18.5 mpg. I am real happy with that. Stock setup, 30/29.5/15 tires, cruise at 2000-2250 rpm. I don't get in to big of a hurry, just enjoy driving it.
