Gas mileage....

Alright guys, my 1997 TJ with 150k miles on it is getting about 14.5 mpg. Granted, my tires are 31's instead of stock so I don't get an actual distance on my odometer. How can I get an accurate reading? What are some things to do to increase my gas mileage? What should I be getting? Thanks!

I should be getting better. I hate it because it's my DD and have to fill up 2-3 times a week.. And I'm a college student.. Lol but it's worth it 100% being able to drive a Jeep if that's what it takes.

Is it a 4-banger or an I6?

Same question:
2000 Wrangler Sport 4.0 Auto Hardtop.
At no point did I expect good gas mileage. But today was my second fill up. I thought the trip odometer was off so I filled up and trying again.
I'm at 30miles off of the last fill up. Should my needle already be at 3/4 of a tank? Like the other college student said..It sucks but totally worth it to have my Jeep.

My first 1/4 tank on my gauge goes quick too, after that it kinda slows down. I get 12mpg at best, so it still goes down to fast

HAHAHAHAHA its called a jeep I run 35's and gas I am lucky if I can pass a gas station without filling back up. If i baby it I might get 200 miles out of a tank and thats a 2010 jk. For the OP make sure you have a clean air filter and you might need a tune up to get a lil better MPG with 150K miles you need to keep that stuff good to keep close to stock MPG.

31s 3.5 to 4 inch lift(going to 33s eventually) I was getting 10 in town. Then switched to straight gas, no ethanol and now get just shy of 14. Speedo reads 10 mph fast at 70, i.e. I am really going 60

Agree, that first 1/4 tank mark is gone almost as soon as you pull out of the station, but that part between 1/4 and 3/4 seems to go on forever (well, forever for a jeep ). I have a 4 banger and get 18MPG when I don't go over 65 too often. When I hit a turnpike and can run 75 it sucks gas a LOT faster, LOL. And I'm stock on 31's with a 4:10 rear end. Love that rear end, makes a world of difference with power. Also, check to see if you have a 12 or 15 gallon tank. The 12 clears out the top 1/4 faster than the 15. I have a 12 so I see the pump a lot more often, but it's a lot less to fill up then the truck I run as my other driver with a 24 gallon tank And it only gets 13MPG at best

Did you switch to smaller tires? My speedo reads 5-7MPH slower than I am going according to my GPS, but I'm guessing because I went from little tires when I bought it to 31's.

NOTHING about a Jeep...especially a Wrangler... is "economical".

My TJ averaged 17.2 on 31" all terrains with an auto.
My JK averages 18.8 pure stock.

These are awesome vehicles but they are not suitable for tight budgets.

But if you can afford it...the Smiles Per Gallon far outweigh the Miles Per Gallon.

What year do you have the TJ's came with 15gallon tanks 97-98 and in 99 they switched to 19 gallon tanks

I average about 18 mpg with 31's on my 4 banger

Also...believe it or not...WHERE you buy gas can effect your gas mileage.
I drive A LOT. I fuel-up about every 3-4 days. I average about 1 MPG more off Shell gas than I do on grocery-store gas.
Same octane level, etc.
But ultimately it all boils down to RPM = MPG

Mines a '99 but it's 12gal. I ran it totally out of fuel to check and fill up (topping off even, bad me) was right at 12gal. Then I asked the guys where I go to get it fixed when it's beyond me being able to do and they confirmed 12gal because it didn't make sense to me either. I'd love to be able to get 19gal in there but it's not happening. Daughters YJ is also 12gal. so go figure?

Exactly what I got on my 04 with the I6 on my first tank. 17.8 mpgs. I was very pleased as I expected no better than 15 or so...

I have a mixture of driving situations mostly what I like to call Rural-Urban driving. Mostly 35mph to 60 mph variations. Perhaps 3/4 of it at above 45.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if they were wrong at the shop. They are good mechanics (Chrysler dealership) but none of them seem well versed in "Jeep". Wish I had a Jeep specific shop within 50-60 miles

I've got 31's on a 2001 Sahara. I get 17-18 mpg. I've checked my speedometer with 2 different gps (plural) and it's right on the money. I only went up to about 60, but it was correct.

I've been told my a friend.... so possibly a myth... but he said that on certain Jeeps they put a stopper of some sort in the gas tank so that even though you had a 19 gallon tank, you could only fill 15-16. He told me that he rewmoved the stopper or whatever and he can now fill up to full capacity.

Might be something worth checking out

Just completed a tuneup... My distributor cap had corrosion on one of the terminals along with rust on that spark wire. Maybe the furthest piston to the back, possibly the second. Spark plugs look pretty fouled to me.. Don't know when the last time they were changed as I've only had the Jeep for 1k miles.

What do you guys think? Were they bad enough to affect gas mileage?

The plugs look ok, well used, but ok.

To the OP, gas mileage wasn't one of the available option on these rigs.
