Gas Mileage?

what kind of gas mileage is everyone getting? i have a 98 6 cylinder on 35s with with 4.56 gears and 6 inches. its a hard top with a spare so it has quite a bit of extra weight... thing is i am getting between 17-20mpg every tank whether i go off road or not.... no one seems to believe this in the town i live in because there all getting 12-15... also mine is a 5 speed and i take it easy everywhere i go.. so is anyone else getting this kinda mileage.. if not could someone tell me why mine is so good....

I suspect faulty math...

Is your speedometer/odometer recalibrated for the changes?

How are you coming up with this number?

The way I get mine is: Stop for gas, fill it up -

Miles driven on this tank / Gallons added this fill up = MPG

(this assumes you reset your "trip-ometer" each time you fill up)

Gettin about 16 with my 2.5, sitting stock. However, I have a nasty exhaust leak, need to get the timing set, and could probably use some various motor cleaning. Oh, and 197k on the clock, so she's pretty tired. hahaa

I don't see how OP gets that good of mileage, the TJ gets 16 on a good day, it's stock with 31's.

OP, have you used a GPS to verify your odometer is correct?

Holy cow Are you sure? I got 31x10.5, 4.0/auto and do more hwy than city and I'm lucky if I go 200 on a tank. I think it's about 14 to fill up.

I've got a 19 gallon tank and I usually show empty around 2 gallons left, which is about 240 miles. I'll drive another 20 miles or so, and fill up.

4 miles off which way and at what speed? You would be surprised how much it could
affect it....have someone drive a specific route and check the miles...then you drive
the same route and check yours.....I went from stock to 32'' tires and it dropped about 35 miles off a tank full. Now on 35's ....hell I don't even check it...

To the guys above, going by the TANK is useless, the Jeeps have either the 16 gallon or 19 gallon tank. Miles per gallon is the only relevant measurement. And if your speedometer is off, your odometer/tripometer will be wrong as well.

My 95, 4.0, 5-speed, 191,000 mile, with 31" tires gets 21-23 MPG. All driving is around town and interstate, and some really rural areas. I drive it nice. I've verified my MPH against my GPS and it's accurate. The higher mileage comes with having the top and doors ON, and running the A/C. I fill up 2-3 times a week (I do A LOT of driving). The worst I ever got was just a hair above 18MPG, top off, doors off, and having FUN!
Mods are nothing more than a cold-air intake, synthetic oil, and a K&N oil filter.
And I have a 20 gallon tank. I believe the YJ's have either a 15 or a 20, do they not? Or am I mistaken?

I will come back to this thread when I have collected more info. I have only checked it once in the week I've owned it, and that was after 5 hours of wheeling in low range. It got 17.3 then. I expect 20+ on daily driving.

Yea, the 16 or 19 was for a 01 TJ, different years could have even more options to choose from, so that makes it ever harder to say someone gets so many miles on a tank. Well if they have a 20 gallon versus a 15 gallon will make a huge difference.

Anyone who can get over 18 miles per gallon is doing something right. As far as I am concerned, no body has an accurate speedometer with tire size variation, and lifts, etc will affect mileage as well. Those of you getting over 20 mpg are you sure you are not driving down hill all the time.

Wow I really thought that I had posted in here already

Ok so here it goes:

1989 4.2L 4" lift 33X12.5X15's I get ~18 after I recalculate for my off speedometer. And I can make it get up t 20 if I drive around with my windshield down

The lowest I've ever gotten was 10 and that was when I first got it and before the tune up, and before I made the exhaust work right
