Gas tank size?

I recently got a build sheet on my '06 SE. It says that i have a 19-gallon tank, but when it fill up from empty it only holds 15-gallons. Does anyone have any ideas? Do Jeeps have a sort of "reserve"? Or is it possible my gas gauge is off?

its possible that its not actually empty. Fuel gauges are generally pessimistic. Ford's used to be very accurate and when it said empty you came to a dead stop. thankfully, they give you a little wiggle room now.

Its either that or someone is storing Narcotics in your gas tank.

So there's no such thing as a 15-gallon tank on a Jeep?

I've asked this question before also. So the last time my light came on, I kept driving for another 60 miles and I was finally able to put in 18 gallons. My light turns on at about 14-15 gallons.
I keep saying that one of these daysI will carry a gas can just to see how far it will go till it dies, but I commute in heavy traffic everyday and I don't want it to die during that time.

Then take a back road when you know you're going to kill it! I pushed my 04 to 320 miles then filled her up.... I was so nervous bc i didn't have a reserve can. it was fun tho.

it is really quite a nice feature for those of use that get 15mpg, so we have the same amount of miles we can go once the empty light turns on compared to a regular car.

The factory build sheet for my '99 says I have a 15 gal. tank, but I've read here all tanks from '99 on are 19 gal. I never bothered to check at the pump, calculate, etc.

The whole jeep gas tank capacity thing is confusing. The topic comes up a lot. I just fill 'er up and drive!

Don't go by the TJ's notoriously inaccurate gauge for when to fill it up. You'll never put in close to 19 gallons if you go only by the gauge that always registers less fuel than is really in the tank. When the gauge gets to the Empty mark, there is always 3-4 gallons left. Personally, I always waited until my gauge was down to the final mark (below the 'E') before filling it up and even then it would have 2-3 gallons left.

Actually, depends on what year your Wrangler is. For a 97-99, you can either have the 15 gallon or 19 gallon. Now, from what I've heard, the 15/19 gallon tank are exactly the same, just a vent hose is enlongated to prevent you from putting in more then 15 gallons.

YJ Gas Tank 15-to-20 Gallon Conversion

There's the YJ modification. For the guy who said his is a 99 and MUST have it, not necessarily. It may just be a later-98 model. It's similar to why some people w/ '99s have the old style keys and some the new ones.

Mine is a 19-gallon tank, but I have a problem where I can't actually fill up without having to hold the pump half-way. It's a HUGE pain in the ass. Also, people don't understand that in my Jeep, when my light comes on I'm not worried for another day or two. I know I've got time!

I have an '04 TJ, I was wandering also why it would never fill all the way up, so I ran on my gas light for awhile and was finally able to put in 17 gallons!

I just requested and received the build sheet for my '03 Rubicon. It lists a 19 gal. tank as #NF1S. The funny thing is it also lists "8 additional gallons of gas" as #YGFA. WTF!! Exactly where is that extra 8 gal. of gas anyway?

Funny that I came across this... I filled up my TJ's tank for the first time yesterday, and I had the same experience. I went to the gas station when the light came on and was surprised that I could only get 15 gal. of gas in a 19 gal. tank. I wasn't all that excited about having to fill up a 19 gal. gas tank in a Jeep that gets less than 20 mpg anyway, so it's all good. For my sake, I'll just pretend I have a 15 gal. tank.

What would be the easiest way to find out if I have a 15 or 19 gallon tank in my 98? Other than running it dry of course, lol...

Only really stripped down TJs usually came with the 15 gallon tank. Most TJs with any option packages at all like a/c etc. more often than not came with 19 gallon tanks.

i have a 19 gal tank and if i fill it when the light comes on i can only get about 14-15 gallons in it, seems very common.

As far as the 15 to 19 gal conversion, yes this also works on TJ's i did it to my old 97. Instead of sliding out the filler neck as seen on the YJ writeup i just took a knife through the sending unit hole and cut off the extra filler neck that extended into the tank. this is because the neck and the tank are one molded peice

I have a '04 TJ that has a 19 gal. I've noticed that when the "low fuel" light turns on and you fill it right away you will normally get 15 gal out of the fill up. I've run it bone dry and it will take just over the 19 gal. Seems the light comes on when you have about 4 gals of fuel left... as we all know the box isn't the most aerodynamic shape so at least the Jeep-gods-that-be gave us fair warning enough to tell us to get back to "Dodge" to get more go-juice before its too late!

My experience is just that... mine. I cannot be held responsible if others try the above mentioned "plan" and do not get the same results. This is especially true if you drive a "Taco" or when u were told to get a "hummer" and ur stupid a$$ went out to a car dealer to get one.

I have thought about running it dry just to see, but I do not want to suck the garbage in the tank through the fuel system. I know there is a strainer that they call a filter, but stiil don't want to risk anything.

I always fill my take when the light goes on, I have had my 2006 Wrangler since 2008. I thought it was a 16 gallon tank because it never filled up more than that but, today it registered as 17.5 gal and I was very confused! Hench, the reason I am commenting on your post. I guess I now know that the tank is 19 gal and when the light goes on you are just before 16 gal. Thank you for asking this question!

The official word is that "in the 1999 model year" all tanks became 19 gallons. My SE is an early 1999 model year production and it has a 15 gallon tank.

This was discussed extensively in another thread, but you don't have to trim the filler tube in a 15 gallon tank to make it hold 19. Just trim the vent tube next to it. That way the ball check valve stays and the tank holds 19 gallons or darned close to it.

99 tj

I was also curious about the size of my fuel tank on my 99 Tj. I found a link in another thread to an online build sheet. I was a little surprised to find mine showing a 15 gallon tank. Mine was also built in dec 98 so I guess I have one of the early models. When my fuel light comes on, I'm lucky if I can squeeze 10 gallons in it.

What would be the point of the low fuel warning light if it turned on when you were completely empty? Not much a warning is it? Of course if you fill up when the light turns on your going to have a bit left in the tank.

So a 98 TJ it was built with a 15 gallon tank? When my idiot light comes on I get about 11 gallons in and I have gone 200 miles w/ 2.5. (18.18 MPG) So using my higher math skills; I have a 4 gallon reserve? and can go another 72 miles after the light comes on? I thought the range was kinda wimpy.

All model year TJs have shipped with both 15 and 19 gallon tanks. Only the really stripped down models came with the 15 gallon and most of those had the 2.5L engine.
