Gas Tank Skid Plate Rust Removal

I want to sand blast and patch the rusting gas tank skid plate. Can I just unbolt the skid plate itself or does it hold up the gas tank? This may sound extremely ignorant but I just don't want it to land on me while working underneath.

The tank is strapped into the skid. Check out rokmen.com for a video on removal.

Glad you found it useful, used it to install my rokmen skid.

If you remove the tank from the skid use lots of pb blaster on the strap nuts as they break off easily, I have proven this to myself on one occasion. Some people will just weld another bolt on to the strap.

Looks like I may just grind the rust off of mine and coat with POR 15. Not risted through yet, but ain't pretty either. Should buy me some time.

Just a heads up if you haven't bought the POR-15 yet, Chassis Saver is a paint that is chemically the same as POR-15, only cheaper. It's made by the same company that makes Monstaliner (Magnet Paints).

There are some good threads over at JeepForum about it if your curious.

Great. Did not know that. I already have some POR as I used it on the floor boards.
