Gas Tank tuck? or options

So besides a fuel cell....


I hear that the 98 sport has a 19 gallon tank but because of the vent tube it only allows you to put in 15 gallons.Is that true?

Is there a shorter tank avalible that will give more under tank clearance?

I looked at raising the tank higher but that doesnt seem to be an option without a body lift.

has anyone used a tank for a diffrent automobile that gave more clearance?


My factory metal tank gaurd is bent and so Is the tank.Id be happy with a 12 gallon tank and a non accurate fuel gauge

I have heard different things on the 19/15 gallon thing, so I am not for sure.

I have gone with an aftermarket skid plate from Rokmen which increases the clearance under the tank. It does require a body lift to do this, but only of an inch. I havent heard of swapping in a different tank, although I am sure its not impossible. Your easiest solution would probably be the installation of a 1" body lift and an aftermarket skid. I know for sure Savvy and Rokmen gas tank skids raise the tank for more clearance. I am sure other companies do this, but I dont know of them off the top of my head.

The tanks are the same size. You CAN tuck the tank up higher without a body lift. Your constraining factor is the crossmember that the front lip of the gas tank skid bolts up to. The front upper bend in the gas tank will hit that and that's as far as you can go. Whether that or the gas lines/fuel pump against the tub becomes your constraint first, it's a close call. A body lift simply lifts the tub up further so that the crossmember becomes the only constraint. Your best bet is to do a 1 or 1.25" body lift and the Savvy gas tank skid. It fits the tank like a glove and lifts it as high as you're gonna get without redoing the crossmember.

Curious of the vent tube issue since I have a 1998 and never get more than 14 gallons in. Is there a fix?

Hah, nice! Unfortunately the vent tube restriction is on the TOP end, if that makes sense. So a gas station pump shuts off after putting 14 gallons into an EMPTY tank because it thinks it's full. People have reported success dropping the tank and cutting a few inches off the dip tube. That means the level in the tank gets higher before the station pump thinks it's full. If you cut it too high though, the pump won't have time to turn off before you get a gas bath...

Ive read that you can remove the fuel pump to allow your hand and a pvc tube cutter in the tank to snip some off that vent tube.It allows more fuel to enter the tank before shutting

After installing a 1" BL and Savvy GTS, I got an extra 1.75" clearance under the tank.

I'm sure it's easier to do than trying to fit a tank from another auto.

When my low gas light comes on in my 2000 i fill up right after that and i ALWAYS end up putting 15 gal in. so 4 gal as a "reserve" seems right. if you ran it dry you could get 19 gal in

I'm wondering about this also. My build sheet says I have the 19 gallon tank, but i'm on dead empty after 14 gallons. I ignored it one day only to get a little spooked when going up a steep road from a light. I got some hesitation, which made me think I was closer to being out than expected. Of course after my visit to the gas station I only got maybe 14.25 in the tank.

I just ordered my Savvy gas tank skid. It can be used with a BL or without. With a BL it will clear just under 2" and without a BL it is like 5/8"-3/4".

In a perfect world, I would like to build my Jeep w/out a body lift. However, the clearance gained by a tummy tuck and gas tank tuck makes it a reasonable compromise.

Plus, with just a 1.25" BL, you can clear 33"s.

My $.02 is just do the 1.25" BL and Savvy tank skid. You will not regret it. It doesn't look bad like a 3" BL IMHO.

x2 on Rokmen skid plate. you dont need a BL to run it, you will have to get the spacer kit unfortunately. although its cheaper than a body lift, and you might be able to get away without changing out the front 3 bolts, and only using the rear spacers from the kit.

I ran the Rokmen skid for a long time. While it's a very beefy skid, it's also heavy and doesn't fit the tank nearly as tight as the Savvy skid, which takes up valuable clearance where it's so tight back there. The Savvy also tucks a little higher. I don't run a Savvy (fuel cell) but have compared the two side by side. The Savvy hugs the tank to the point that it's an interference fit. It's as high-clearance and light as you'll get.

Park it with the driver side tires elevated on the curb with the fuel pump.


It'll tilt your tank so the filler is the highest point.


You may get some stares...

A trick I learned from an attendant is to rock the Jeep back and forth a few times to burp out some air allowing more gas to go in. I'm not positive whether it actually works, but I do that every once in a while so I can pump to a round dollar amount. I don't have to do it as often now that gas prices are much higher.
