Gear

Hey Ive looked around and have seen you can just change out the gears in the rear ends in stead of changing the whole thing! I'm wandering if it is cheaper to go that way or just swap the whole thing? I want to go with the 4.3 v6 chevy swap so all I was unsure about was the rear ends thanks for all input!

Which rear axle do you have now? If the dana 35 then, (plastic fill plug) think before you spend money on it, as its a weak axle. If you have the dana 44(metal fill plug) then go for it.. However, both the front and rear gears need to be the same ratio or darn close.

The front and rear diffs need to be geared the same to use 4 WD. I know nothing about swapping the engines, tho.

Okay thanks for that info! I'll try to find good replacements, I want to put a electric locker in the front and a full time in the back!

You only have to do the rear if you only plan to stay in 2WD drive. And no, the ratios cannot be darn close they need to be as precise as possible or you'll chew right through 'em. I would highly recommend if you have a Dana 35 to look into picking up and welding a Ford 8.8 out of a Ford Explorer. You'll pay $1k for a set up Dana 44, you'll pay $350 for a donor 8.8.
