Gear question

Please forgive me for asking this question, but I'm still a newbee. The jeep I bought has a 4.56 gear in it with a dana 44 rear end. I have the dana 30 up front. I read somewhere that the 4.56 wont fit into a dana 30, so does that mean the front has a different gear.

You can fit up to 4.88 in the d30. There is no possible way to safely run 2 different gear ratios in 4wd. I have 4.56 in my d30 so it is possible.

Random Guy: "Is there anywhere that thing cant go?"
Me: "Yea, past a gas station..."

I also have 4.56 gears in my front Dana30, so clearly that can be done. The only thing I can think of to explain what you were told has to do with the carrier. If you begin with a Dana30 that has 3.07 gears, most 4.56 ring and pinion sets won't fit on the stock carrier. However, there is an easy fix: buy a new carrier that does accommodate the 4.56 r&p.

If your Dana30 has 3.73 gears, no carrier replacement is required to upgrade to 4.56 gears.
