Gearing my 4 Banger

Hey guys,

So i have a 98 wrangler SE 2.5L with the 5 Speed, and Im lookin to lift
I'm on a tight budget right now, but I'm looking at a 4 inch lift with 33s
Would a be able to sneak by for a while with the 4.11s that came stock, or should i just save and regear while im doing the lift.
Also what ratio should i go to, 4.88s?

I think you will be fine with the 4.11s.

It may it may not bbe tolerable, just depends on how you drive it. When you do regear, go to 4.88s.

It really is your tolerance though. Is it your DD? I know a Guy that has 35" super swampers on his 4 Popper woth stock gearing. I on the other band regeared with 33s and my 6cyl.

Thats crazy idk if Id be able to bear it at all. My 4 banger with stock tires feels sluggish on the highway.

If Im going to regear at any point I might consider an axle swap with a higher gear ratio, but its up to you man. See how it feels, might not be so bad.

I'm running 33's with the original 4.10 gears with a 4'' lift on my 4 banger, and it does just fine. You buy a Jeep knowing it's not a hot rod, but it does just fine in the city and on the highway. Takes me longer to get up to speed, but it will do it. The place where it sucks, is on the highway going up mountain passes. Then it really blows!

See, different people have different tolerances. If I were you I would save a bit more and possibly get a new rear axle like an 8.8 while you're at it. But, its up to you and you may be okay with the power loss!

My lifted 2.5L with 33's does just fine with the 4.11 gearing. If you're having powerloss issues, drop it into a lower gear. Problem solved. Straining your clutch with low rpms in 5th gear is going to burn your clutch out. The 2.5L likes the higher rpms
