Gearing Question? Pro's and Con's.

OK, I own a 2001 Jeep Wrangler, Straight 6, automatic transmission, and i have 33" BFG KM2's on it.
I have a few questions number one is I want to re-gear for sure I was thinking of putting 4.88's in with a Eaton locker in the front. The question was is 4.88s overkill for only 33's, and if so what are the pro's and con's of either going with a lower gear or going with the 4.88's.

Its a road jeep mainly but eventually it will be strictly off road vehicle also the gears in it now are stock they are 3.07's. Dana 35 in the rear and 30 in the front. Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

4.88 will make it a beast offroad with 33s and you'll be ready for when you get the itch for 35s (Pro). If you do decide on 35s, you'll need to replace your D35 with a D44 or above (Con). On the hwy, you'll most likely be maintaining very high RPMs to keep up to speed which might make for bad MPG (Con). 4.56 is what you'd probably want for a DD that sees mostly hwy use though.

Agree with what ^ said.

Which automatic do you have? 3 speed or 4 speed?

If it's a 4 speed, the over drive gear is really high so with 33s you'll want to get 4.88 for sure. I don't have first hand experience as I have the 5 speed, but that's what I have read over and over on here.

That's the transmission I have with 33" tires and 4.88 gears....I'm in gear heaven!

A 2001 is a 32RH and is a 3 speed, if you have a 4 speed someone dropped it in there because Jeep didn't start putting them in Wranglers until 2003 (42RLE).

I'm that case I think you need 4.11s because the 3 speed doesn't have an over drive gear.
