Gears

Question, I just got my daughter a 97Tj 2.5 as is with A 3.5 lift and 33" tires (I think I got that right) but I am finding out from reading a few posts I need to change the gears to account for the bigger tires. So what changes should I be making with the gears to get more power?

Regearing both axles to 4.88 from their present 4.10 ratio is what you want to do. This 4.88 recommendation assumes your daughter's transmission is the 5-speed manual.

It typically costs $1100-1200 to regear both axles. And both axles do need to be regeared to use 4x4.

No, that's definitely not a job for anyone but an experienced ring & pinion installer. I have a garage full of tools, welder, etc. and do my own work but I won't do a ring & pinion installation. Out of the dozen techs at my two local 4x4 shops, they only trust 1-2 techs in each shop well enough to do ring & pinion installations.

Half of the cost I quoted above is just for labor.

roger that, my plan is to wait till my daughter is comfortable with the jeep's lift and 5 speed before changing the gears and giving her the added power, will it hurt the jeep to keep the gears as is a little longer?

Nope, other than it takes a bit more clutch to get it moving with the 4.10 gears in there now.
