Gears

Whats up guys. so ive got a question that hopefully yall can answer. Ive got a 97 tj that i have done all the work to, but theres one thing i dont screw with... and thats the driveline. its a 4.0 with a 5 speed. the motor and gears are stock... all fine and dandy until i put 35"s under it. now it wont get out of its own way 90% of the time...and taking it off road is going to end up destroying my nice centerforce dual friction clutch. so heres my plan...putting in new gears... just bough a set of truetracs... while ive got the diffs apart, figured new gears would be my best bet. im planning on 5.13s... anyone know if this will be sufficient for turning 35's...i have to believe it will, but im not positive. i appreciate any input....

4.88s would be better ;] upgrading axles too? if you have the stock rear d35 then it will not hold up long with 35s espeically if you lock it

35" tires on a stock D35 is not the best idea. You can't regear a D35 to 5.13. 4.88 is the highest.

I certainly would not regear a stock D35 with 35's. I wouldn't want to do it twice.

yeah, ive been concerned about the axles for a while, but ive got 12k on the 35s and the d35..and the jeep has 135k on it... so i figure if she blows she blows. plus i got a steal on the truetracs, and dont want to waste em...gotta figure it out... if i do swap axles....best axles to swap in? ford 8.8s?

D30 can handle 35's. If you lock the front I would upgrade.

Go 4.88 gears if you still want to be able to cruise on the highway at a decent speed. For upgraded axle ford 8.8 in the rear and if you don't go too hard d30 will work up front.

see, thats the issue.... im not trying to completely rebuild my jeep around a set of axles. haha. i thought about ordering a nice shiny new set of d44s out of quadratec.... but i figured feeding myself for the next year and making house payments and such was more important... not the most economical choice.

I figure I may not be around for that next year so I just have as much fun as possible. It's only money right?

haha, nastyrider...you raise a valid point. but either way im gonna do the gear swap and truetracs... even if i pull the axles, when i sell em atleast the new owner will get a good set up. hopefully theyll hold up for a little while until i get to do the swap.

The issue is that if you regear your axles so your engine will be able to spin those big heavy 35" tires, and 4.88 IS the correct ratio to do that with, a busted rear axle shaft will be in your immediate future. Regearing will allow your engine to generate enough power again to be able to overstress those rear axle shafts.

For more photos of what happens when you run too big of a tire on a stock Dana 35 axle, visit http://www.billhughes.com/dana35c/

Sorry, the part I was trying to quote was the 5.13's in a D30.....they don't exist.

I recommend the 4.88 gears and an 8.8 FTW. 8.8 is stronger than the D44 and can easily be gotten from me I'm in Chesapeake and can get the axle up to Hampton if you want to meet up. PM me and haggle out a good price. If you get the gears I'll set them up properly for you too (for a little more)
