Getting bumper opinion for my father

My dad is looking to get new bumpers and steps (which are all stock) for his '06 TJ and he came across this combo pack:

Quadratec QR3 Front Tube Winch Mount Bumper with Rear Bumper with Hitch & FREE Side Steps for 87-06 Jeep® Wrangler YJ & TJ - Quadratec

He does zero off-roading, but does do a little trail use. I can't get him to upgrade his small/crappy tires, yet he has no problem buying new bumpers. To each their own. At this point, I'm just happy he's actually considering a mod.

Anyways, was wondering if anyone had any experience (pro or con) w/ this bumper set that they could share with me.

thanks in advance.

Tube bumpers aren't exactly known for their rigidity. They are made of thin metal and will dent/break easily if he slips into a tree even while trail riding.

Have you looked into thedirtworx?

I haven't look into anything personally.

For me, bumpers are likely going to turn out to be the last "big" mod I do after everything else. Leave it to my dad to do his mods bass-ackwards. LOL

And, I personally can't stand tube bumpers, but that's entirely another argument. I asked him why he chose these and the best answer I got was "it comes w/ the side steps I want"

But on a serious note, he did say he wants tube bumpers as he likes the look and he does want new step bars so it's a win/win in his book.

I don't see their lack of strength coming into play as part of his decision, but would you say they're weaker than factory bumpers? If so, that may sway his decision some.

I've never personally ran either into a tree at any speed. But I'll put it to you this way, they're definitely not gonna be stronger... They're essentially made of the exact same tubing the side steps are. And I wouldn't trust most side steps I've seen to protect my jeep. But that's just my two cents.

I know how dads can be, they know what they want and that's what they're gonna get. But just a few things to think about. Side steps are pretty cheap, he can get slightly stronger bumpers for essentially the same price. Only down side to thedirtworx bumpers are they come unpainted. He's an independent guy who sells them on eBay. I've got his tire carrier and I'd buy it 1,000 times over. Great quality stuff.

Look at JCR Offroad. There bumpers are well made and reasonable.

if he's not doing any offroading and it's just a DD then it's more for looks not function. I'll bet you it's just as strong or stronger than the stock bumper. Looks good, have fun!!

I did notice these bumpers have no built in recovery points. I consider those a necessity even for trail use. But that's just me.

I looked up JCR but didn't see any tube bumpers. I don't personally care for tube bumpers but for some reason my dad likes the look.

I gave some advice last night, to go with the approach I used when researching bumpers....

Just browse all bumpers you can find, paying no attention to price, and just jot down any and all options you want your bumper to have (winch mount, recovery points, built-in hitch, fog light holes, whatever).

Once you have your list of must-haves, then go look at bumpers again, narrowing it down to the ones that match what is on your list. Eventually you'll find the one that has what you want, and matches the price you want to pay.

If he really wants tubes I see them in the for sale section here and on CL pretty cheap on a regular basis.
