Ghost Turning Signal

Well The Other Day (The One Day I Take The Hardtop Off Of Course) It Rains I Mean IT RAINS, And I Got A Tarp Over It As Fast As I Could. But Now When I Start My Jeep Whenever I Let Of The Brake The Sound Of A Turning Signal That Out Starts Going Off, If Anyone Has Any Clue On What To Do It Would Be Helpful Thank You.

Sounds like you have a short in the multifunction switch or the turn signal relay which is located in the steering column or a shorted wire. Pull the two covers off of the steering column and give it a look see. It should be three screws and it splits apart.

I think the previous owner of my 03 X had some rain troubles considering the things my dash does. I have no turn signals or brake lights on my left, and the green arrow is on whenever it pleases. And my dash makes a beeping alert noise (as if the ebrake was left on) whenever it likes, but stops the second I use the right turn signal. So I have to flick it reak quick multiple times on any ride to quiet it. I've been trying to get into a shop but I've been very busy. Does this sound like a simple short or something? I dont feel like messing around with complicated electronic troubles.

Did you find an answer?

I just recently encountered the same problem after a rain storm that my jeep was caught in uncovered. When I turn it on a fast paced turn signal sound occurs unless I push the brake or use a turn signal when the normal clicking comes on. Thats if my turn signal works at all. This is an extremely annoying sound and need to get it to stop! if its a short, what am I looking at to get it fixed? Thanks!

Wow, it's strange to me why so many have problems after their Jeep gets a little rain on them... I left a 97 hard top TJ out in the rain for 6 or 7 months without the top on it and the only thing that I remember having a problem with was the front speakers died on me after about 5 months... The 97 I have now hasn't had any doors or windows on it since the day I got it, about 2 months ago and it's been rained on 2-3 times weekly, and I don't have any issues with it either... Some people drive their Jeeps equipt with snorkles through water over the hood and sometimes over the dashboard, and they make it through unharmed...

Do you guys live in a really salty environment and don't wash the salt of your Jeeps?

I would check and see if you've got a bad ground somewhere.

I have left my '98 Jeep out in the rain many times, and never had a problem, so I don't know what this is all about. I live in DC area, so no salt really. I will do anything just to make this sound stop. I am no mechanic though so I am not sure what to look at, my husband took the plastic front off under the steering wheel and we looked at the wiring but again i don't really know what to look for. What's a bad ground?

You guy's have me stumped, I would just be guessing if I offered any advice on this one.

I would guess maybe a relay, or flasher is going bad, or a loose conection or bad ground somewhere, and as another forum member suggested maybe the turn signal stock it going bad. You haven't recently installed LED style turn signals or bulbs have you? Some of thos require a different flasher unit, and/or a resister inline with them to work correctly.

I Talk To A Guy At O'Reileys And Him And I Both Agreed On It Being A Turning Signal Relay , If You Remove The Cover To The Steering Column And Put Your Hand And Feel For The Relay You Will Actually Feel The Relay Constantly Ticking. Then You Can Remove It And Replace It As Such

The only issues i have seen in the newer jeeps is during a conversion to LED lights it changes the resistance on the flasher so it will cause them to flash very fast. but the flasher is also tied into several other safety sys. so i would change the flasher board and see if that resolves the problem there are some web sites that will tell you haw to modify the board for led's and it also will disable the part of the board that tells you you have a bulb out, other than that pull the plugs apart and remove any water or residue, put some dielectric grease on them and put them back it may be a resistance issue caused by water or corrosion.

So is the Relay a box??? If it is, I think we tried replacing that and it did not help. When i press the brakes the clicking stops so maybe it is a wire?? I have been unable to take it anywhere at this point but hopefully in the next day or 2 and I can get this problem solved.

Sometimes it's as simple as pulling a bulb out of it's socket and cleaning up the connector. Check the sockets that the turn signal bulbs mount in for corrosion or the ground screws on those same lights.
