I've done it twice, and had no problems either time, and did nothing to prepare for it. Except save up the cash.
This one was the first time, you can see one time 30" and one is 31", half way through getting them swapped out.
As soon as I figure out how to get more photo space, I'll upload my 2nd.
And here's the 2nd. I had reached my limit on photos. With as much money as this site has saved me, I just figured it was worth it to be a supporting member.
This one was done almost exactly 1 year later. I lost the white TJ in an accident this past summer.
I'm not a heavy off roading person.
85% in the garage
10% Weekends driving to get milkshakes
5% off road.
I have no lift, don't think I will, I like it just the way it is.
I've stuck with the same set up both times.

I believe the Rubicons came with 31's and the Sports had a 30" tire package as an option. The only thing I would look into is changing your speedometer gear once you swap the tires. You might rub during full lock though.
For the OP, I've gone from the stock 30's to 31's and you will have rubbing without back spacers when you max out the steering wheel to one side or the other (which has happened to me maybe twice in 2 years)
As far as the speedometer, I've checked my speed against my GPS and a few speedo phone apps, and at 60mph I'm off by 1mph....I can live with that.
I have a Sport and it has 15x8 wheels with 30's. I recently upped it to BFG AT 31's and had to add one washer to the turn stops. Mine was set up factory with 30's and they had the speedo set under on speed so the 31's seem to be close to it now for speed.
I have the stock wheels with 5.5" backspace and 31x10.5 tires. single washer for steering bump and I have 0 issues. No spacers, no lift. 3.75 to 4 is recommended with a 12.5" tire. Adding the steering stop length is simple and there is a lot of info on here on how to do it.
When I went from 30s to 31s, I had no steering/rubbing issues. It also made my speedometer dead-accurate (check with GPS before changing speedo gears).
Stock tires on mine were 225 75. I put 30's on. Speedo app shows I am now doing 1 mpg over indicated at 45 mpg and up. Many manufacturers have you doing a mph or so less than indicated with stock tires. 31's would probably put me about 2 mpg over indicated.
Seems about right. Mine came with 30's to start. With 33's I'm maybe 3-4 mph faster than what the speedometer shows.
