Good buy?

Hey guys. I drove past a local dealer and saw an 04 wrangler x for 10k. It's black with black soft top. Had 140k on it. Called them. Guy said the air is good and cold and drives straight as an arrow. Had aftermarket front bumper, though I don't like the bumper much and would change it. Not sure about auto or manual. I am an Audi/VW tech so any repairs wouldn't be an issue. I'm going to go look at it Monday or Tuesday to make sure it's not is shitty shape. If it looks OK I may jump on it. What do you guys say?

I think they are asking too much in my opinion, i got my 04 wrangler x with 175,000 miles with a soft top for $5500. They only thing it needed was new tires but it was only $600.

If you can knock em down to 6k then I would say it would be good. I got my 02 with 25k miles for 15k and that was only a couple years ago.

Hmm. A lot to think about. Nada values it at 11k. I'll look it over real good when I go look at it. Hopefully I can talk them down a bit. But if it's under retail value...

I think it's a fair price, especially where I'm at. I have yet to see any deals like anyone else has posted about.

I used to be in the car business and still have access to our appraisal tool. Its a pay service called Galves. It is the way the used car manager used to come to values for trades plus current auction prices in the area. Here is what I got plugging it into the site. -350 if it’s a stick. Obviously condition would adjust price.

Vehicle

2004 JEEP WRANGLER X

Description

Engine Type: 4.0L 6 CYL
Body Style: 2D CONVERTIBLE UTILITY
VINCODE:
Standard Features: CD STD
DUAL FRONT AIR BAGS STD

Base Price: @ 105000 miles 8050
Mileage: 140000 miles

Adds and Deducts

As Equipped Price 8050
Mileage Adjustment -1700
GALVES TRADE-IN VALUE 6350
GALVES MARKET READY 7300

So an asking price of 10k if these figures are backed up by auction sales in your area wouldn’t be out of line. Now how much they will come down will be based on any additional cost to get the jeep ready for sale such as shop costs and advertising which is usually a flat fee assessed to all used vehicles.

I'm kinda with you here. I live in Asheville NC too. So all 4x4 command a premium here. I have searched further away and prices are lower the further from the mountains you get. I'm also not sure about all the features. I'll check with my used car manager on Monday. He's been in the business for a long time and is a jeeper himself, have one for his last 3 vehicles. But I will certainly try and talk them down a little bit. Especially since it's a motorcycle dealer and I'm trying to trade in my bike.

So after looking online on places like auto trader and what not I think it's not a bad price. But when I go look I'm going to look it over top to bottom. Is there anything problematic at that milage I need to look out for in particular? This will be my first jeep so any more input would be awesome.

^there isn't an Achilles Heel on the TJ so give this one a thorough inspection like you would any used vehicle with 140K miles...make sure you test drive it at all speeds and also engage the 4HI and 4LO systems on dirt/gravel to be sure they function. and of course spend a lot of time checking for rust on the frame and tub.

Considering it's sitting on a dealer's lot it's not a terrible price, but I wouldn't call it a bargain. If you can knock them down a bit & it checks out then go for it.

One thing to keep in mind.. if you plan to really off road this jeep.. the X only came with the rear dana 35 axle, not the far better dana 44 rear. You can swap one in but your looking at a couple grand. I would keep looking and see what else is out there.

I saw that. I have been looking pretty heavy around here for wranglers but they just don't exist in the price range I need them to here. Like I said earlier I am in the NC mountains and everything like this commands a premium. Im going to try and get a loan through a bank here so I can try and go private. But going through a dealer and having to trade in my bike makes it hard. I cant do my bike AND a jeep. I have been trying to sell my bike private for a couple months now but I've got no hits on it. It's kind of annoying because it is very worth what I am trying to get for it. The place this Jeep is at is at a bike dealer so they are willing to give me more for my bike than a regular car dealer. I can also always keep an eye on junk yards. Not to mention I found these. Though I am not sure how good they are. Im not going to be doing hard core rock crawling. Just some light trails and all. Being an auto technician has benefits of a lift and many more tools to fix things as well. And I want to get used to a Jeep before I try and jump into crazy stuff.

Scratch the last bit there. Learning as I go. Didn't realize that those wouldn't just slip on in there. Sorry for the NOOB remark there.
