Question Good Deal? Keep Looking?

First off this is a re-post of mine, I apologize still getting the hang of this (forum posting website), thought this post would be better here.

Hi all, the name is Stoff. New member to the website and hoping to join the Jeep community real soon. I have been hunting for a Jeep and think I might have found one. Real quick background information. I am living in Gainesville, FL looking to move to the Colorado mountains as soon as I get a Jeep. The perspective sellers are work friends (we work at bars next to one another) of mine leaving for the peace corps soon and looking to sell one of their cars. Here it is....

Asking $10,000-12,000

2002 Jeep X (4wd, used extensively mudding and rock crawling, as well as day to day)
Automatic 5 speed, 6 cylinder
NEW engine w/ 2,500miles on it, with 10yr, 100,000 warranty
Soft top (might be interesting in the mountain winter)
Black

After Market adds:
K&N high performance air filter
K&N throttle body spacer
Banks exhaust system
4” Pro-Comp suspension lift (make sure to highlight the lift being a suspension lift and not some dinky body lift)
33” BF Goodrich All-terrain tires with matching black wheel rims
4 KC headlamps mounted on the hood
Leather seats
Aftermarket grill guard and caged head/tail light guards

Things that could use some fixing:

A/C only works on high setting (but it still gets very cold or very hot)
Sub woofer in center console is blown out
Fender flairs were taken off and are missing
The two front tires will need replacing soon but the back two were added brand new about a month or so ago.
Front right turn signal is out.

Anything I should look out for in particular? Anything to check when inspecting the car? Anything I should try to notice when test driving? What can I expect to go wrong next/how much money might I have to sink into it relatively soon?

Thanks any and help is much appreciated.

good price for 10k. just hopefully the frame, and the lift is still in decent shape after all the mudding and rock crawling.

What should I look for when I look over the car? Wear in certain spots? Anything that would be alarming? Sounds or feelings when I drive the car?
-Thanks-

In general. vibrations, shakes, wobles, or the feeling of going sideways or having to apply "rudder" to keep going in a straight line. Don't forget to test the brakes, on a road where there is no traffic apply the brakes hard from about 30, you want to make sure there isn't any pull to one direction or another.

did they make a 5 speed automatic in 2002?

if you ask me, its been messed with too much for 10 grand.
Its been beat on
has intakes and exhausts many would hate
horrible DD tires (in pictures), they will be bald quick as a daily driver. or does it have BF ATs like said in description? you said front were bald anyway

fender flares can be expensive if you want to buy a set.
Sub woofer could be costly too.

after thye tires, fender flares, AC work, Misc stuff you find. your looking at another chunk of money.

even the engine being new is scary in a way. does this mean the tranny is original? if the engine died from abuse then the tranny is probably close too
as with everything else. who knows how many miles or on the rest of the jeep.

it looks nice and could be a great ride, just a bit more of a gamble.

Personally think 10K is to much. How many miles are on the jeep?

If you move to the Denver metro area, you'll have to get it emissions tested, on rollers.

For a reference point, when I was looking for a TJ a month ago, a stock 2000-or-so TJ 4.0L/5sp/100k would normally go for about $8500 on Craigslist in Denver.

Eww, there's nothing appealing about that Jeep and the owner doesn't seem to know anything. First of all there is no such thing as a 5 spd auto TJ and he must be on crack if he thinks those are BFG a/t. Also to much lift for 33s (don't even look like 33s to me, more like 31s), ridiculous engine mods, and the new engine would scare me. The jeep is only 9 years old and it has a new engine?

I would pass, why not find a clean stock jeep driven by some old lady? Then you can build it right.

X 2.... I found my STOCK 04 X that was nothing more than a mall cruiser for more than $1k less than this one you are looking at. It's a very good looking TJ.... but it has also been VERY used according to your post.

This is your first warning

Automatic 5 speed, 6 cylinder

Could be a typo??? Manual trans or Auto?

NEW engine w/ 2,500miles on it, with 10yr, 100,000 warranty

Second Warning The 4.0L 6 cylinder is a great engine why on earth did they need to replace it??

Soft top (might be interesting in the mountain winter)
Black

After Market adds:
K&N high performance air filter

Serious waste of money

K&N throttle body spacer

Even more serious waste of money

Banks exhaust system

4” Pro-Comp suspension lift (make sure to highlight the lift being a suspension lift and not some dinky body lift)

Meh lift. Not awe inspiring. I would be careful considering all the other problems.

33” BF Goodrich All-terrain tires with matching black wheel rims

Those are not BFG KO's

4 KC headlamps mounted on the hood

The hood is the thingy that covers the engine compartment. Not the thingy that covers your head.

I would not even consider this Wrangler for $6k.

I got an untouched '03 rubi for 12,500 that had never been used off road (i had the shop that checked it out take the gas tank skid out...usually a giveaway. I am with the others in that this thing looks very used but the "mods" that have been put on. I worked at a jeep dealership through college as a network admin and got to know the techs pretty well and they showed me how they look at jeeps when they come in...i would pass and get one and build it yourself that way you know it is done your way, most likely the correct way and not inheriting someone else's problems.

Similar set up to what I got (98 Sahara though) no engine issues and I paid 6500.00. either go in that range due to the replaced engine or pass...

Have to agree with everyone, 2+2= 5 on that one.

For a "mud bogging/rock crawling" BLACK jeep, the owner has to be more anal then me about the body. And I am anal big time.
Didn't see a blemish on the finish, let alone a dink/dent/scrape on it. And black would show it like a hammered thumb.

And such a set up for bogging and crawling and not a winch to be seen?

And it still has the milk jugs on the back bumper?

I'm thinking this was more of a wanna be, aka a mall cruiser.
