Got bored... Worked on the TJ!

So I decided to paint my interior/fenders/steps. I didnt like the gray handles so I put the welder to work a bit... Let me know what you guys think.

hahaha that's SICK! I like the chain handles. Plus your fenders came out really nice. I just repainted mine the other week and then spilled gas which immediately ate through the paint.

Also, your shifter, what size thread did you use and how did you go about making it? I want to use an 8-ball or possibly a golf ball (might be too small), but don't know if there's anything special to do.

I agree with burton, your rig looks pretty gnarly. What type of paint did you use and how did you go about doing the interior? I am planning on doing this in the coming months, just to make things look a little nicer inside.

Those door handles are great man!
It reminds me of a Mic stand that a buddy of mine made.
Did you weld them up so the chain is stiff, or is it loose?
I'd like to see some close of pics of them if you have some.

I actually just drilled a hole with a spade bit (a reg drill bit would make a mess) I got the hole just a bit smaller than the shifter and started to turn and push it on. Because a baseball is made of string wrapped around a cork, the string started to thred on the shifter and it tightened up.

This would not work for a golf of 8 ball but I think the 8 ball would be a great idea! Good luck... let me know if you need more info

The interior isnt that bad to do. Alot of the parts can be taken out and sprayed and that makes it a much easier. The plastic interior parts can be hard to get paint to stick to. I have done this a few times (I hate boring gray interior) and it has held up well.

1st. You have to get the parts clean of wax and oils. You can get a spray can of plastic prep from most auto-stores. Use this to clean the surface.

2nd. sand it to scruf up the parts with light sandpaper or scruf-pads. (180 grit?)

3rd.I also use a flex adhesion additive to help the paint flex with the panels, this can be in a spray can also.

4th. Spray your color! I use rustolem because it is so durrable and glossy but the other plastic paint that everyone uses works well also.

Also I used a primer on the exterior parts to help but its up to you.

Good luck and let me know if you need any more help!

I will get some closer pics for you this week...

They are welded stiff (only way to do it) I have all the welds under so you cant see them from siting/standing next to the door. Then I grinded and then polished them up a bit.... I am thinking of doing the bar on the pasenger side also

What you did looks good! Now paint the Jeep cover on the front end, and the license plate holder on the rear, to match the flares/steps. They're both easy to remove and paint.

You had to notch out your door panel a little more for the links, huh?
Looks good though. Very original.

Just out of curiosity,
is there a reason you didn't go with the polished stainless chains for the project?
I think they'd look really good in contrast to your black door panels as well.

That is the next plan.... I want to fab a new bumper for the front so I am holding off for a bit... The back one and plate holder I dont care about as much....
