Smile Got my TJ!! - see questions/build plan

I am so exciteD!!! Closed the deal last night. This will be my daily driver (50miles round trip each day) and my surf mobile on the weekends, and occasional trail use.

2003 Jeep Wrangler X, 5 spd, 4.0L, hard top, 100k miles on it
  • Dana 30/186MM Front Axle
  • DMMS 3.07 Rear Axle Ratio
  • DRJS 175MM Rear Axle
  • Rims, 15x7 aluminum "Ecco", 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern, 5.5" backspacing, +38mm offset

First couple of things that I need to "fix"...
- Needs new carpet. Conflicted here. I think I want the carpet but do I get the vinyl or regular carpet?
- Bigger question/project is the tires. With the 3.07 gear ratio (I am not planning on re-gearing anytime soon) I limited to a 31x10.5x15? or can I push this to 32s.
- Lift. Still deciding but I either go with some sort of a budget boost (to clear 32s) or get some sort of an OME/BDS system (I understand that this should improve the ride on/off road from the stock system. With 100k miles on the car, it may need new shocks anyways.

Any thoughts/opinions appreciated!!

congrats on the jeep and welcome to the forum!..first off you should be fine with 32s and not have to regear, but your going to need new wheels or wheel spacers to fit the width of the tire..32s are normally 11.50 wide and a 10.50 is the widest the stock wheels can take..even my 31x10.50s rub the lower control arm at full turn on stock wheels..secondly the lift depends on how youll use it, if you think you'll really get into wheeling and want to do it more you might want to go with a suspension lift like you mentioned OME and BDS very good brands...but if you want the lift and bigger tires for looks then a spacer lift will be fine, as you said if prob needs new shocks anyways..pesonally id go with a suspension lift because at 100,000 miles those springs are prob saggin a little anyways.. but no matter what in the end its your jeep and do what YOU want to it ;] enjoy!

I had 31's on my tj when I bought it and thought it was gutless in 5th gear. It will also dipend on the tire as well. Just because it says 31, or 32 on it doesn't mean anything. Check the manufacturers website for actual sizes before you buy. I once had a set of 35's that were actually 32.4" new I now have a set that are 34.8" new. My buddy has a set of 33's that only measure 31.2" . Advertised and actual sizes are often two different things.

That's a really good point about actual tire size vs. advertised. My current 33's are really 32.5" but my old ones were almost 34" and the difference was immediately noticeable when I made the switch. Also, I'm running 3.73 gears... Also a good point above about springs sagging. I had spacers with stock springs and my front end sagged pretty bad after 100,000 miles. Once I switched to OME springs the stance was perfect. Just keep in mind that a 2" spring lift is going to be higher than 2" spacers. Good luck and congrats on the purchase!

Thanks for the comments so far. For tires, I am going to either get the BFG ATs or the GY Duratracs (I've pretty much read a lot of the previous threads and these two seems to be 1A and 1B for a balance of on/off road). Can anyone comment if either/both of these pretty much run true to their stated sizes?

Good thought on actual tire size. Running (for the next 5 days and then new 33's) Dick Cepeck 31 x 10.5. Actual size (yes, alot of tread left and they are mudders) is a tad over 29" high. The width is accurate. Monday she goes in for a re gear (3.07's now) to 4.56 along with BFG 33 X 10.5 on Crager soft 8's (15 x 8) with 4.5" backspacing. I like a bit narrower tire, didn't want the 12.5"s (where I wheel a narrower tire is a big help). I checked the BFG's and they are 32.8" tall. I travel mostly old narrow mine roads and Railroad grades. Plus with my experience with my old power wagon the wider the tire meant pushing more snow and less ice traction in the winter. I can get chains for the 33 x 10.5"s but the 12.5"s is a bit tougher and quite a bit spendier. With that said though I probably will at times miss the wider 12.5"s. Oh well, just my preference. Seems to be more discrepancy on advertised tire height than width.
