I just purchased this hard top for my 2006 TJ. The PO advertised it as a Khaki top from a 2005 Rubicon. From what I can tell the tops were available in Black or Dark Khaki. I'm positive this isn't black- but I'm not sure it is "Dark Khaki" either. It almost looks greyish/green and (almost) matches the greyish flairs on my 2006 TJ X.
I looked on paintscratch.com and they show a "dark Khaki" paint code ZJ8 but it looks more brownish then greyish.... *contrary to the second photo, Mine really doesn't look brown at all.
I'm looking for touch up paint since it has a few small scratches. Any suggestions on the color??? Or who may carry hard top touch up paint in this color?
Faded out Grayish color.
There is Plasti-Dip which can be used. If you do that I would also hit your fender flares to make everything the same color.
You will get better responses.
Is the inside white?
Yes the inside is white. The scratches are fairly small, so I'm basically looking for a pen or brush/bottle applicator just to do a touch up. The current color which looks to be OEM (it is positively not repainted) is a close enough match to the fenders-it actually looks really good in person.
Did they make a top in Grey-ish? or were the tops limited to Black and Dark Khaki? I really wish they would have provided a paint code somewhere on the hard tops.

Go to Single Source (auto paint place) if you have them around, they have a special camera they use to take 5 random pictures and then hook it to a paint mixing computer and they will give you pretty good match. It has probably faded so touch up paint won't match real good anyway.
I had a Khaki colored hard top on my 2003 tj I bought from a 2005 TJ. I was able to get a 2006 black hard top so I sold the Khaki one. Here is pic of the Khaki color one. Looks like the one you have.
^that's what I did, my local auto body shop had one of those cameras, they took a pix of the Camel interior on my Sahara and then made an exact match paint mix and sprayed my hardtop Camel. (the factory top was "Tan" which was actually a medium brown color).

Its called a "Spectrometer" its a good way to get a start on the proper color, however "Exact" match is far from the truth. A camera will never get a match as close as the human eye.
A pint of urethane will cost you around $70. A pint is pushing it for coverage on a hardtop. Of course that doesnt include reducer, clearcoat, hardener.
Thank you. To be clear, my top is not faded at all. My confusion stemmed from not having a color code and when I looked at ZJ8 (Dark Khaki) on a touch up paintscratch website the sample that appeared seemed to be more brownish then grayish. It's could be the computer monitor. "Big Fran" and your top(s) both appear the be the same exact color as mine. If they are dark khaki and the code is ZJ8 then it would be a match. I'll see if Chrysler/jeep stocks that color in a touch up pen. The scratches are small and give it character, but the PO touched them up with an off color and it looksworse because of it.
I was originally looking for a black top, but stumbled across this one. I'm glad I did, since the color goes nicely with my blue jeep.
p.s. I stumbled across two other websites that listed all color combos available for 2005 hardtops. According to the websites the tj itself was available in a variety of colors but the tops were limited to two or three. Dark Khaki being the only probable match. Black or Spice is not even close.
I'm checking the shops but I am also looking at the possibility of using a quart of Satin Black and applying it using those foam brushes (for trim) and foam rollers. Saw one a guy did about two years ago and it still looks sweet.
Plus one on the Sherwin Williams. They do auto paint. Had some wheel powder coated. I had to paint the plastic center caps. They brought out that big camera and took the picture. They mixed it up and offered a clear coat paint or regular. They mixed it up and injected it into spray paint cans. Perfect match.
I don't like flat at all, I like semi gloss or satin. I dyed my top and it worked great. I will post some before and after pics if I get this damn computer so it will allow me to send attachments.
