I and a lot of others have used Fusion. I painted my gray one black 2 1/2 years ago. I did the interior with Fusion Textured shimmer black. It looks dark gray.

I'm sure he did, that white looks kinda funny, IMO, plus all the muddy footprints on them look bad after a while...

My hardtop on my 93 YJ was Raptor lined black. It used to be tan. Came out nice...and it has seen 3 winters of plowing...it is my plow rig only. No fading and has a slight more texture than factory. It also deadens sound pretty nice. I don't have pics, but I can get some...It's in storage for the summer...I work part time at a collision center and we have done several hardtops for people and have had no complaints.

You can paint the outside of your hard top and make it look extremely good. My top was tan, sitting on a dark blue jeep. I painted it black with Krylon fusion last summer and I'm about to lower it from the rafters in my barn, and repaint the sides only because the paint peeled from around the windows where it's hard to prep. I will paint up to where it flattens out on top, but won't paint the top again. (no one ever sees the top, really)
When you prep for paint, spend extra time in the crevices around the windows and around the door openings. And, if you have the vents in the rear corners, it's best to leave them on instead of removing them like I did. They don't go back on very well and I had to use a little glue to hold them in. (at least mine didn't go back in very well) I don't know about herculining the top....that may be some much added weight to your top that you might regret. It makes good sense from a "looks" standpoint, but it sure may add some weight.
Good luck....I say go for it!!

I painted the outside black and the inside with the shimmer black. The white inside looks like crap with the dark slate interior. The shimmer balck was a very good match.

Krylon fusion flat black
I did this about a month ago, not fading so far.

My prep:
1. Warm water with towel and soap to take dirt off.
2. Warm water with new towel to take rest of stuff off.
3. Sand with scotch brite pad
4. Warm water with towel again to take off dust from sanding.
5. Then dry rags to make sure it's squeaky clean and dry

Just if you do it make sure you have alottt of light, because it's hard to make it come out even, i "finished" the top and took it outside and all i saw was spots, went over it a couple times again and now it's good. Anyways im not the best painter haha.

The only problem that you face using the rattle can paint on such a broad surface that is open to the environment is fading. You also won't get a constant even application. The raptor liner is sprayed on, and is not heavy, it is not a roll on application. It also dries slower, so you won't get "dry" spots in your paint. You don't have to apply it thick, you can put it on lightly, which is what I did.

Also, on prep, if you do decide to use spray paint, then you want to first use a wax and grease remover on the whole surface to be painted, then use a scotch brite pad to scuff the entire area, and use some elbow grease around the door openings and windows/edges. Do a final clean with a water born wax and grease remover, then your paint will adhere nicely.

Kind of off topic, but has anyone put any rubberized undercoating on the interior to reduce wind noise? just a thought.

^ i would think that it would be 2 heavy on a fiberglass top i want 2 paint my faded hard top but i think its going to have 2 many lines in it from a rattle car job and a roll on truck bed liner would be 2 heavy

I sprayed my tan top with gloss black Fusion two weeks ago. Not perfect, but "livewithable". After all, it's a Jeep.... there are worse blemishes on the body

I used a rattle can of black trim paint from a local auto body supply was high quailty and exspenive but top looks good.
Can hunt up can in my garage if you want to know brand.

I had a Jeep dealer repaint it once, and it didn't look any better than my rattle can job, and it needs to be touched up every year anyway

Spice Hard Top

Any one painted a brown hard top and if so what brand/color did you find came the closest to the stock color? I have been thinking of doing mine but I have no desire to have a black top.....
