hard top to soft top?

hello, i have a 1997 TJ sport hard top and was wondering if it's possible to convert to a soft top during the summer. on the back of my jeep there is a long strip of velcro and was wondering if the previous owner had one. three questions i guess. 1. can i convert from a hard top to a soft top(silly question i know,i'm a newb) 2. if so, do i need a kit with the soft top and hardware? 3. do u have a brand you recommend? i'm not looking to spend a fortune.

thanks,

Jack

P.S. sorry if this question has been brought up before. i couldn't find anything in search

Absolutely you can switch. You will need the soft top and hardwear.
Click on the link below to get you started, you will have several options.
Personally I have the Besttop sailcloth with factory hardwear.
Jeep replacement soft top application guide - Quadratec

If you don't want to buy the hardwear, then you can go with a "framless" top that uses your roll bars as the frame. Saves a little money, but a little harder to take up and down.

Another good rescource. I forgot about the new NX tops coming out. Probably worth the wait!

A suggestion... get the factory hardware and top or upgraded top. They do offer cheaper options for soft tops but they won't seal as well as the factory hardware/top. I purchased the Bestop Supertop with hardware through Quadratec and I wish that I hadn't. It always leaked and I had to unvelcro the entire top off the hardware to take it down. Unfortunately my top was torn off and I decided to purchase the oem hardware and I like that much more. I went from hard top to soft top and enjoyed it more. You always carry your top with you and you don't need a second person to take it down.

So many options-this will get a little confusing-may also want to consider bikini tops safari tops with jammers and dusters-depends on your use-there is also a halftop option that I personaaly love for winter. But will be switching back to the summer tops before too long.
What is your use of the Jeep-DD-light wheeling every weekend-no wheeling-garaged-passengers-where do you live weather wise lots of rain? need your a/c in summer? All questions to think about that MAY influence your purchase or what works for you.

i live in southeast PA. i would like to use the AC when i have my dog in it(bulldog, she needs it). i haven't had to chance to take it off road until i get some repairs made. i'm not gonna do any heavy duty rock climbing with it but i would like to take it to the pine barrens and the beach.

They do sell a hoist for the hard top so that you can do it yourself, but you'll need to attach it to a tree or a ceiling. I live in Houston, TX so it doesn't get ridiculously cold here like the northern states so a soft top year round is fine for me. I also don't keep much in my jeep though because security is now an issue.

I would get a hard top over a soft top I have had all kinds of tops and I always go back to the hard top fact is it's nice to have both but if I had to chose on or the other I would go with the hardtop.

Garage or no? I am asking as you could save a lot of cash with a safari bikini top duster and windjammer if you don't need backseats very much. Put hard top back on for winter. Just another thought Option?

I concur...Stick with the hard top and for going topless & doorless...look at Bestop Bikini/Safari tops, Windjammer and Tonneau Cover (dustcover)...this set up works...Although if you are transporting Passengers...you may want to remove the windjammer...

Not trying to add to the confusion...that is the good and bad with Jeep accessories...many to choose from...take your time, research the various accessories...see what other Jeeps are equipped with...then make a decision...Do what works for you...

Keep this in mind...Jeep top accessories and motorcycles are like flowers...they come out in the spring and disappear in the winter...

Lastly...Opinions are like "_ _ _ holes"...everyone has one...
