A guy in a local jeep club has put his hardtop up for sale for a TJ. Having survived one winter with the soft top (and getting some minor scratches) I would like to invest in one. He said make an offer and did not mention a specific price range.
It is missing the rear window and I am wondering how much I should offer...
Also, it is tan and i would like it to be black. would it be very difficult to paint it with bedliner? In the end would this be worth it to purchase with all the work i'd put into it?
Thanks in advance
In our area, I see hardtops go on Craigslist anywhere from $800-$1200. You can buy replacement windows and paint/bed liner. So, I'd advise you look into the prices of the specific items you would need to to the work yourself. Then add in your own personal labor cost. Take that about into consideration. Now if he'll let you have it for around $500 or so, I'd totally jump on it. If he is one of those guys that tells you to name a price, then keeps dragging you to a higher and higher value, then forget it.
I think a lot is dependent on location but I see quite a few on Craig's list ( RI - MA area) for $500 - $600. I actually just listed one for $400.00 trying to move it quick.
I wouldn't pay more than 2-300 bucks for it without a rear window... A tinted rear hatch with defrosters is like 300 bucks alone.. Then the cost of paint... Your time. And the correct wiring harness to get everything to work. Your at the
Price point of one that's allready black and has a rear window. I recently got lucky and picked one up my self in black, great shape. All glass in tact for 400
Another thing to consider, is your Jeep wired for a hardtop. When I bought my hardtop I still had to add the wiring kit. The kit can be purchased from QuadraTec and includes switches for the wiper and defrost, a dual pump fluid reservoir and all the wiring and tubing. What year Jeep is yours, what year is the top? Someone already mentioned the vents. 1997 - 2002 are different from 2003 - 2006, the vents for one and the wiring harness is also different.
I put an earlier model top on my '05 and had to deal with converting the harness. If you can follow directions, the install is time consuming, but not too bad. There are many write-ups out there for the harness conversion.
The have been posts over the years where people have bought tops without glass and it adds up to a lot fast. In addition to the glass, add the lift supports and the mounts on the glass for the lifts are expensive (hinges wiper motor etc is more)
