harmonic balancer trouble!!!!!

ok so i have a 98 wrangler 2.5 i was removing the balancer and it shattered now all that is left is the center of it stuck on the crank anyone have any idea how to get it off now

Could you grab a picture for us? If there is enough of it left, you could probably get a 2 or 3 jaw gear puller to pull it off. If that won't work and enough broke off that you can get the cam out, you may have a better chance getting if off by taking out the cam and working on it that way. If we can see what you're dealing with we can help you better.

Dang. Were you using the three bolt holes to pull it off?
Well. doesn't really matter now. Try using a bearing spreader, like used with a press, and a two jaw puller

Yeah I'm going to guess that some kind of jaw puller is going to be your best bet. You can rent them from the auto parts store so if you get one that doesn't fit correctly to pull it off you can exchange it. Other than that, I'm not sure what else to tell you.

From your picture it looks as though the damper has been tack welded to the end of the crank (12 o'clock position). If that's the case you'll have to grind through the weld to get it off. Not sure why someone would do that though...

Wow! It does look like someone tack welded it - the idiot!

If so, you may have to use a very sharp chisel and shatter it more, taking it off a piece at a time. Be careful not to mar the crankshaft surface.

That part of the damper is cast, so it will shatter with the right whack.
If you can get a puller to grab it, try heating the piece before trying to pull it.

Or - you could weld a hunk of steel on the remains and grab onto that.

The tack weld - try to remove as much as you can with a dremel.

After it's off - use fine Emory cloth to restore the marks.

It won't be easy, but it's still easier than putting in a new crank.

I not understanding how y'all are busting them.
A 3 bolt puller works fine, I have pulled literally 1000s of them. and that should be a little RTV in the keyway, keeps oil from leaking.

broke pully, forgot washer!!!

Okay, so all tutorials I saw never mentioned the washer! oops. so now I used brute force (and I'ma smaller guy) and the whole damn thing broke off. I have heated it to touch and sprayed with WD40. What the hell?! I have both kinds of pullers and thinking the grabber kind with the 3 claws might work. Only one bolt hole left, so other kind didn't help much. Grabber kind only has one side really, so it doesn't seem to work. damn. welding is not really an option if I don't have a welder... Any more suggestions?

Put the bolt back in but leave some room between it and the balancer. Spray penetrating oil liberally between the balancer and crank. Using an air hammer with a rounded bit, hammer straight on the bolt as if you were trying to hammer the bolt into the crank. At the same time use a prybar on whatever you can of the balancer. Place a small piece of wood between the prybar and oil pan/timing chain cover and use that as your fulcrum. Make sure to keep an eye on the bolt so that it doesn't walk to far out of the crank or you could damage the threads.

What washer are you referring to?

thanks, got it!

Okay, after you take off center bolt, there is a large washer. It must be removed to use a puller!

I made a long video of my adventure. The last scene shows my end results! So, if this happens to anyone else, there is an answer! I don't have an impact wrench or anything to heavy duty. This worked!

BTW: I don't think they are welded. I think that is just from manufacturer. Mine had same darkness, but not welded. It was also on washer (as you can see in video I believe).
