Has anyone ever rebuilt an NV3550?

For the last week or so, I have started hearing a rattling noise that seems to go with engine RPM, but is more prevalent when moving. Friday while motoring through traffic, the noise started getting louder and 1st gear suddenly became hard to get into unless the Jeep was rolling slightly. However, I had to drive somewhere last night and this morning, and when the tranny is cold, it seems to go into gear fine. Once driven for a few miles, it gets hard to find 1st again. I am thinking the 1st gear synchro is going?

That, along with a very noisy nuetral (I have heard these are loud transmissions, but I have never heard one as loud as mine - it sounds like a diesel when in nuetral) makes me think this transmission just needs to be overhauled. (I swapped this trans. behind my 4cyl. about a year and a half ago. It was out of a boneyard with about 60k IIRC, and has been pretty noisy since day 1 for me. I put a new clutch in at that time so I wouldn't think that would be the problem )

I am driving the Jeep to Moab (~1,000 miles one-way) next month, so I think I am going jump into this project ASAP. Has anyone ever rebuilt one of these transmissions? I have never done a transmission before so any advice would be appreciated!

thanks,

Mike

wait, are you trying to rebuild a transmission in 1 month when youve never done one before? If youre on the time crunch, you might as well get a new transmission then work on the other transmission after you get back from MOAB

I think a manual is more complicated than an auto. 1 month-2000 mile round trip, what is a trouble free trip worth to you?

Thanks for the replies, the replacement-for-now transmission is a good idea. I think I do want to rebuild this thing myself, although I guees it might be a gamble having its test drive be a 2,000 mile trip! I will pull it apart as soon as I can and see how it looks and go from there. But first I need to replace the transmission in my Tahoe so I can drive that again (when it rains, it pours, LOL!).

thanks,

Mike
