I just changed the fluid in both diff. and noticed my 4cyl. only has 3.73 gears. It is an auto but I thought all 4cyl come with 4.10 gears. This would explain why it didn't feel super great down low.

Yep some with 3-speed autos came with 3.73 gearing. The reason being is with the factory size tires, the rpms were a bit high to go with 4.10 gearing since the 3-speed does not have an overdrive.

so a transmission swap to a 4 speed / overdrive
like from a cherokee
and rear gear change upgrade to 4.10
would be a better match

it seems like an expensive way to go....

any other suggestions ?

I will probly run this for a while. I was thinking of getting another jeep later but now I'm thinking of running this one while I buy parts to build a nasty ls1 jeep. Get some dana 60s then a conversion kit for ls1 and trans. Then swap all at once so the jeep won't be down for to long. Problem is I have to buy the wife a cherokee first lol. I don't know yet or buy another jeep if I find a great deal and ride this one till I finnish the second one.

Oh I love GM thats why I want an ls1! Not that the 6 doesn't get the job done, but if I'm going to spend money might as well go crazy. Even if I have to take a loan from my 401k lol.

It'd be tough to get a decent 4-speed auto tranny like the AW4 bolted up to the four-banger 2.5L engine and working well. He's pretty well stuck with the 3-speed 30RH transmission so long as he has the 2.5L engine and wants to stay with an automatic.

Yeah before I had the tranny rebuilt I looked to see what my options were, and with this motor jerry has it right. I have to keep this unless I want to put in a clutch and manual. Thats why maybe later it will be a GM/jeep combo. I don't know yet. I may just get a used rubi later and let my wife wheel this. This stuff cost lots of green!

You still running the factory size tires? If you've installed large enough tires like 33", regearing your axles would perk the performance up dramatically.

I just bought a set of rims and I will probly only go with 31s so I hope the 3.73 cut it with the 31s. I thought about regeaing but for the cash I would rather just get new axles with gears and lockers. But thats down the road. I have another kid on the way and want to get the wife an suv first. Then all my spare money will be for another jeep or building this one. The more I offroad the more crazy I want to get with it. Its like crack or something.
