Has to be my tranny? Right

Just bought this Jeep and got a deal because it needed a new tranny. When I back up it makes a clunk, clunk and keep doing it as long as I am moving. Doesn't matter if clutch is engaged or not. This is a 99 with the 4.0 and manual transmission. Just seems odd that it is only in reverse. All forward gears work perfect. Haven't got under Jeep yet but this should be a AX-15 right.

I do not know much about transmissions but the reverse gear is not a synchronized gear. That is why it helps before you shift to the reverse gear shove it into 3rd so it can sync.

97-99 AX-15 behind the 4.0. Since reverse has its own interm shaft, an idler gear, and so on, it isn't odd to me to just have rev problems.

Reverse doesn't have syncro's. It has 2 gears to their own shaft and an Idler gear that falls between them when reverse is selected.

It doesn't matter wether I put in a forward gear then shift to reverse or not. Still makes its noise.
