having trouble getting 5.25" speaker and adapters to fit in dash

I picked up a set of JL 5.25" speakers and a set of adapters. I am now tring to get them installed, but running into an issue. The JL speakers are hitting the steel piece in the dash. There is a steel piece that followed the outside conture of the 4"x6" factory speaker that the frame of the JL's are hitting that will not allow them to fit in all the way (no where near). The only way I can see to make this happen is to cut that metal piece out with a dremel.

Anybody run into this?

I'll let you know this weekend. I've ordered the adapters and should be getting them tomorrow. I'll be moving my rear Boston Acoustics to the front maybe this weekend. If you figure out something before then, let me know. I'll give you my report after my install. Oh, what year is your Jeep?

Noticed your screen name. I sold my 71 442 convertable a few years ago to finance my Jeep purchase. I love my Jeep but man I miss that Olds.

You have probally already tried this but put the speaker in on an angle.Right side first(if you are looking at it) Also do you have the adapters? I had problems with certain speakers fitting b/c of the magnet size.

I just got my adapters in the mail yesterday. Concerning that steel piece you mentioned here is what it says.
Quote:
Cut the unneeded section with a metal saw. There are indentations in this section that make a nice marking for where to cut. The metal is soft, so it should be easy to cut through. The bracket cannot be installed without this modification. There is plenty of bracing without this section so as to keep the dash solid. The speaker bracket itself creates a nice brace to replace any possibility of loss in structural stability. Newer Jeeps do not require this step.
So, just cut 'em out. Good luck.

Just installed mine on my 04. No cutting involved. Unbolt old speakers, install new speakers in adapter and screw in adapter. No problem.
