Heater blower motor, factory vs VDO replacement

In case anyone searches this topic seeking firsthand input regarding the $60-$80 aftermarket blower motor vs the $160 factory unit I thought I would post my experience here.

My heat/AC went out, all speeds. I read up on the common issues and the "relay mod". The conclusion I came to was that the motor being worn is the issue that causes the excess current at the switch to begin with. I opted to replace the motor and switches together. I ordered both from www.rockauto.com

When I opened the VDO blower motor box I found a disappointing design and the fan wheel was not fastened to the spindle squarely, which causes a warble. I had some trepidation when I saw the "made in China" on the motor, but proceeded anyway. I installed the part to see if somehow centrifugal force would make it run true. Not a chance.

I called the dealer to get a price on the factory unit. $160. I checked a few sites and found no better than $20 savings, but none would have the part in my hand the next day so I went with the local dealer.

I have the part, and it is well made. It is also made in the USA by real live Americans, which to me is a huge plus.

I will update this thread with info, good or bad, as time goes on. The craptastic VDO unit is going back to rockauto where they will ship it out to someone else most likely.

If your factory blower is making noise or sounds like it's vibrating, take it out and look at it. The way they are situated, things find their way down in to that squirrel cage. Then, they throw it off balance when you have it on and it makes a lot of noise! I found leaves and dead bugs in mine. Cleaned it out and no more noise.

A little late but I have a 1999 wrangler, since there are a few blower motor designs for the TJ's over the years.

Cool HAC Motor Works only on High

I am trying to find out if I need to replace the motor or some other part since the blower works great on High but dead on other settings. Really can get by with the high settings but would like it to work correctly! 2005 Wrangler TJ.

You need to replace your resistor.

The blower motor resistor pack is a simple, plug-in, flat box-like thing that costs about $20. It is in a sort of hard to reach spot that requires you remove your glove box. It is easy to do, but is really tight if you have big hands like I do.

The motor runs at high normally, and the resistor is like a step-down switch that lowers the amount of juice the motor has to run off of.

So a dead resistor pack causes you to only have the high speed with the other settings doing nothing at all. This is a normal replacement item and if you use Google you can find several good videos on how to do this repair yourself.

This is my favorite video for this fix, and I used it when I replaced mine. NOTE: There are three in this, so look for the links to the second and third ones. It also covers removal of the blower motor, which is really easy.
