Heater core problems

O.k. I've been smelling antifreeze for a while in my 01 tj sport and couldn't find any leaks under the hood area so figure it has to be the heater core. my question is does anyone know if it would be covered under the warranty or how to tear the dash apart to change it out if it is not covered. I had to do one on my cj7 before and it was quite frustrating. Have they made it easier to do?

If you bought an extended warranty, I would definately find out if they would fix it. I personally have not messed with a heater core on a Jeep. I am sure that it is a pain, considering where it is located. I wouldn't think you would need one already, but you never know. How many miles do you have on your Jeep?

It only has 60k on it and it is definately the core. It blows steam and fogs my window when I turn it on. I looked on my extended warranty pamplet they gave me and it says cooling system and a/c, but it don't have the heater core listed. I'll call the local dealer tommorow and check with them.

I was hoping you had the extended warranty, cause the basic one ends at 3yr.- 36K. I didn't realize they could go out that early. Bummer. Hope they will fix it for you.

I replaced mine in a 97TJ. The good news is that the cost of the heater core is not to bad. The not so good news is to replace the heater core you have to discharge the a/c and recharge afterwards $$, partial removal of the dash, and the compartment comes out of the vehicle. Heater core and a/c evaporater in and out easily. Almost a days work. Time consumming!
Hope it is covered under warranty.
FYI, Oh yea, mine still had the smell for a good while, kept me thinking that I still had a leak. Got a can of cleaner from NAPA to spray in the a/c compartment and it finally was gone.
Good luck.

Hello guys.
A question for you.
I have the 2001 2,5 lt Wrangler. I am also facing heater core problems, probably a hole in it thats why Im also having leakage, white smoke coming out of the vents and bad smell. How much approximately does a new heater cost? just the part. I've heard that the whole dash board has to come out in order to replace the heater core.

Here are the step by step on an XJ, the TJ is not that much different other than center bezel removal and center console.
