heater door moves by itself

Problem: driving down the interstate I have heater set to come out of the dash vents, but the door inside the HVAC will move by itself. This seems to be vacuum related. The HVAC flips off of dash vents by itself and I can take my foot completely off the fuel pedal and the HVAC will return to blowing air from the dash vents. It's a 97 SE. I just drove 1500 miles dressed like a polar bear. Has anyone had this problem before, or have a clue where I should start looking to fix it ?

2 things you can check that are often the cause of your issues.

1) cracked or disconnected vacuum hose causing a vacuum leak. Check the hose #2 in the diagram by the manifold, then check all hoses under the hood for connections and condition :

2: Look under the dash and inspect the operation of the 3 vacuum actuators while you operate the mode switch. Each one controls different vent selections and should move when selected:

Thanks for the diagrams. They actually help out a lot. Worse come to worse I'll just replace all the plastic hose. Maybe I should do that anyway since they are probably 14 yrs old.

Mine did that when I first got it, it was cracked at one of the 90 degree bends by the heater/ac fan
