Hello New Here!!!!

HI everyone..

New to this forum... Thanks to swampjeep for pointing me here. Well I am the proud new owner of a 97 TJ. Got a heck of a deal on it I think. only needs a little work.. had a bad exhaust leak, and has a miss sometimes... back glass is gone.. and along with everything with it.. what do i need other that just the glass.. the wiper assembly.. what goes on the bottom the latch and such? or does that come with a new window? this is what i need the most help with...

here is a pic of it on the dolly brining it home..

as you can see its bone stock...lol...

I put a new steering damper on it since he said it shook and before i looked it up changed it.. well today is the first day of actual driving.. around 50-60 start to wobble pretty good. I had someone move the wheel while looking under and everything seemed pretty tight however when the wheel was movign i could see the whole axle moving too.. so something has to be old or bad... the only kinda loose thing was the tie rod end that connected to the steering arm. track bar and such seemed tight too.. very very small movement.

One of the back shocks is bad.. but i dont wanna change it cause it will be no purpose since i want to upgrade to a lift in the future. I am thinking a 3" lift with new shocks then i can get some 31's or 33's

Forgot to mention it is the 4.0 sport.

thats about all i can think of right now.. hopefully i can get this front end thing figured out soon.. maybe i should just get a adjustable track bar since i will be adding a lift soon.. any other thoughts or pointers anyone can give me is appreciated!!!!!!!!

welcome. track bar won't have anything to do w/ vibe on stock jeep. vibe at that speed on stock jeep is usually tire balance. have tire balance checked. this could be magnified if front end is loose. if you have a loose tie rod definately replace that, then align it, or get it aligned. whole axle moving sounds weird. and you can probably get the whole rear lift gate used. glass, latch, gate and all. good luck and let us know

welcome The back glass on the hard top has no latch, the tailgate holds it closed. In other words when you go to open the back of a wrangler you open the tailgate first, then you lift the window.

WELCOME to the addiction,
remember ot wave at other jeepers

ur wobble is curious because it usually comes when someone lifts their jeep and the driveline is misaligned, but for me when i turn the front wheels on pavement the front will move a few inches (not axle i cant see that, but the top of my hood), i think its because you are standing still and the tires dont want to turn on the pavement b/c of the high friction b/c it isnt rolling, or at least i hope so then i have a problem too

that sucks, yj and cj you can get just rear lift gate. one good rule to go on w/ problems like this, is don't over think, do the simple basics first. gotta have the basics covered, it really sucks when you are takin half a car apart, and then decide to check a fuse, get what i mean. of coarse i've only heard about this from others, i've never done it.

I think that if you can move the trac bar by hand, it qualifies as "excessive" because you will have many times the force that can be applied by hand on it when driving. You could take it out to check the bushings and the holes to make sure they aren't worn. Also make sure you check the control arms for tightness as well. Good luck!

welcome to WF..

start at the cheap fixes and work your way up. Tire balance and alignment are a good starting point. Look for excessive play in the stteering components and tie rods next.

Welcome to the WF. I agree with jeeperman. If your axle has any movement, you need to check the upper, and lower control arms. If they are all tight, than the bushings are probably worn out. Easy to replace.

For the control arms, i wouldnt get anything else unless it has flex joints of some kind or Johnny Joints.

Do ur axles move side to side too or just forth and back?

slight side to side only, the tires were a bit out of balance.. way better now.. but every once in a while still kinda bad.. so i am going to change the one tie rod end on the pitman arm.. and see if that helps...

Tighten the trackbars and see if that helps as they are what controls side to side movement.

If nothing else, just put a soft top on it. You have the ease of convertibility and you have your back window (p.s. hold on to the hard top, you might find that back window when you are not looking).

Yeah you got a real good deal!!!I only know of one other that was any better.I have a buddy that just bought a 98 TJ sport black from his inlaws for $500 cause they thought the tranny was out of it and all it was was the slave cylinder.I put him a new one in and it runs and drive great. It also had a busted manifold and they priced everything along with new brakes and they were told by 2 places that it would cost $3800-$4200 to fix it and after $300 in parts he has a great cheap jeep.
