Post Help

I have recently bought my first Jeep.. A 2000 Wrangler sport. It has 53k miles and is a blast to drive. Standard shift, 4X4, the works. I mean I love my new Jeep, its my first one, and I dont think ill ever have anything else. I have some trouble thou, especially when its cold. The trans doesn't want to shift from gear to gear. Mostly from 1st to second. When it warms thou, its better.. Its not great, and I still have some resistance, but it is better than the first shift. I took it to a mechanic and they told me that it may be that my trans needs rebuilt. They gave me a trans service, and sent me on my way, and informed me that I as looking at $1,000 to $1,500 for a rebuild and clutch. I don't know, but I noticed a small drip coming from the trans and am thinking that it may have had problems before. My question is, have you ever heard of this situation? If so, what is the problem/outcome? If you are from Hamilton,OH area, what mechanic do you recommend for this?

First, stiff shifting when cold on a jeep is nothing new. Feeling a little stiff is one thing, but so stiff you can't shift is another.

What happens too is that the synchros begin to wear and go bad. Only a rebuild will fix that.

I have the same issues. Replacing the fluid and making sure you are running the correct fluid is a good first step.

I also will shift from first to third until it warms up, or will shift from 1 to 2 but only after the rpms have settled.

A rebuild might be warranted, but learning to live with it and replacing the fluid might keep money in your pockets.

Btw, I had my fluid replaced and about 80 percent if the issue went away. Sooner or later though, I will need a rebuild too. I have 130k on stock transmission.

Thanks, I was thinking that I would just deal with this issue for now too, What is going to happen? Eventually will I crush my trans completely
?

Your tranny is a nv3550, and has to have syncromesh fluid, you may try replacing it to see if the wrong kind is in it

No way to know, I would drain it and fill with the correct fluid just to be sure

I would ask the guys that did the work. If the tranny needs to be replaced or rebuilt then driving it won't make it any worse off from the stand point that it is toast anyway. At some point it may become non functional but the cost to replace will still be the same.

With such low miles on it, whoever drove it before must have been a ding bat.

If it were me I would start by asking the shop why they know it is bad and what fluid they used. Start there first.
