Bought a 2001 tj last month it had been on its side and damaged the engine. I replaced the motor with a 2004 which went fine, have driven it for about 600 km no problems.

Took it out in the sand dunes this morning and within 5 mins the temp shot up to 125 degrees c , basically to the max and the check gauges sign appeared.

It eventually cooled and I drove out of the sand and tried to slowly drive home, it wasn't happening as the temp kept rising so stopped and got recovered.

Couple of things to piling out

When the car was hot it seemed to over rev between gears and revs would not sit right when ticking over it would rise.

Once car was recovered and returned home it ran fine but would clearly over hea again if it had the chance to get hot again.

Any ideas where to start?

I live in middle east and we were out at 6 in the morning so it wasnt that hot

First thing I would do is take the thermostat out. It's only 2 bolts. Then refit the housing, fill water en start her up see what happens.

If temp stays ok, fit a new T-stat.

You can find the thermostat housing following the upper radiator hose towards the engine. Just above the waterpump.
