how do you remove the rear hub off a 1998 wrangler. what holds it on?

There is a flat axle shaft and bearing assembly retainer bracket hidden behind the brakes that hold the axleshaft into the axle tube, four bolts hold it in place.

It looks like this...



You can see how to remove it and even rebuild your D44 axle shaft and replace its bearings at Stu Olson's website at D44 Axle Shaft Removal and Overhaul - 1

Do you mean the rear axleshaft? With the wheel studs on it?

ya the rear axle shaft with the wheel studs in it sorry was not for sure what it was called

If you have a 44, then do what Jerry said. I'm not sure about the Dana 35's on the TJ's. If you have a rubber fill plug on the diff cover, then it is a 35. If it is a metal plug, a 44. The year of your Jeep might help too.

C-clips inside the differential retain the D35c's axle shafts, here's how to remove them... D-35 Axle Shaft Removal

Sorry I mistakenly assumed you had a D44... lots of D44 activity this morning which had me in that mode.
