HELP aweful noise

Help i am a college student and i wanted to try to get some help before i have to turn to the dealership...
model: 98 Sahara Manuel(w/ the 44, lsd and 3.73 ratio)

problem: clicking/knocking sound during acceleration (all speeds) and a bit of a grinding sound during coast clicking. starts at about 10mph and occurs about a second apart @ about 45-50mph

trouble shooting on my part: put the tcase in neutral and ran through the gears, put the trany in neutral and coast and grinding noise occurs, jacked up the rear axle and got the noise to occur by giving it gas, took off the rear drive shaft off and drove with in 4wd just gridding noise occurred

What were you doing the first time you heard it? Any wheeling, cruzing the streets? How's the clutch feel, have you tried droping the front driveline to see what it does? Check transfer case fluid (and tranny for that matter)

Also check u joints drive line and front axel(sents there exposed) as well as front hubs, jack up front end check for up and down tire moment (grab the tire with your hands and try to wiggle back and forth and up and down)

Play with the clutch, put in gear let it out just till it trys to engage. Push back in. Note what it does .. does it only do it under acceleration? Rev it up in neutral (about 2000)..

If the rear DS is still off, jack it up and turn each wheel to see if it stays with a wheel or in the axle.
Take the front DS off and try it in 2wd...if it's still there, jack up the front and see if it stays with a wheel or something in the diff.
I had a similar sound a few months ago in my Tcase so I took off the front shaft and it went away. Put it back on and never had it again. I believe the neutral fork in the Tcase was not in correct position but when I took the tension off...it was able to return properly. At least thats my story...
Good luck

idid a donut in a gravel parking lot...
the clucth feels good

when i ran through all the gear while the tcase was in neutral their was no noise...

jacked up the rear axle and got the noise to occur by giving it gas in 2wd(in gear prob not the best idea)(frount was still on the ground)

had the rear driveshaft off to replace the u joint closest to the tcase because there was a little play

and... i can time out the sound and let off the gas and it does not occur

Check tranny mount ad well?... what am i looking for? play?

@texas do you have to take off your front driveshaft every time shift in and out of 4wd?

ill drop the front driveshaft tommorow morning (just got home from work) and ill give the results
thank you guys so much

Yes your checking the tranny mount for play. Is it cracked and allowing moment where it shouldn't? Are all the bolts tight? Check where it bolts to the skid plate and where it bolts to the tranny. Be sure to check the front end as well (axels and axel u joints as mentioned eariler).
Also if you get a grind going from neutral to gear while shifting the transfer case (tranny in neutral) this is common and not to be worried about. Goin down the road is another issue..

Did you check you transfer case fluid? Can't remember if ya did or not.

At this point it sounds like its in the tranny or the transfer case.. but need to finish checking everything first.. really hard to tell with out being there on site to hear it

No. Just the one time.

How loud is the noise? Does it sound like popcorn popping? Dumb question but that's what mine sounded like.

Another thought .. lay under your jeep and give your muffler a good smack with the palm of your hand... just to make sure it ain't a exhaust rattle

That, combined with your first description, "98 Sahara Manuel(w/ the 44, lsd and 3.73 ratio)", makes me wonder if you cracked the rear clutch pack in the limited slip. If a little piece got into your rear diff gears, it would be making that click/grind even with the drive shaft off. If you have extra fluid and a spot to make a mess, maybe pull the rear diff cover off and look for pieces of metal knocking around loose in there?

sorry I've been really busy with school and work but I have determind that it is the rear dif because spent all day on it I jacked it up and gassed it and went with a screw driver and then i took off the driveshaft while it was up and it did a clicking sound but the faster you spin it a louder sound is produced
how often do the clutch discs in the rear lsd go bad and what do i do if they have? i just changed the fluid today also and didnt see any big pieces? how much would that cost if thats the case?

thanks so much
