Help buying a 98 TJ

Hey guys. I'm brand new to the forum and I am leaving tomorrow (sun) morning to drive to upperco md. from blacksburg, va. to buy a 98 TJ.
Its a 98, 103,000 miles, 4.0 6 cyl, 33's, nice custom rims, 4" lift, a/c, air bags, real clean on the interior. He's selling it to me for 5,000 flat. Was asking 5700 and I talked him down cause I'm bringing cash.
What should I really look/listen for when I'm test driving the jeep? I'm new to jeeps and have driven one only one other time. Any advice would be helpful! Thanks! Can't wait to get my jeep.

Check for most things like any vehicle you look at.
1. if auto check fluid.. if dark and smells burnt, find another TJ.
2. Check the radiator fluid for oil, most need replace between 100-150k
3. Check for damage to the skid plates, lower control arm mounts on axles
4. Most 97-99 had an exhaust manifold crack where the down pipes come together.
5 Make sure 4wd drive works
6. Make sure AC/Heater works
7.Pull carpet and check for holes in foot wells and behind seats
8. Did you run a VIN check?
9. check for rust at quarter panels
10. Maker sure latches on trail gate don't bind (not a big deal)
11. You can do a key on key off 3 time to see if the computer is showing error codes. (you can look up how to do it on the site or on the web)
12. Check for any loose steer componests
13. with the lift check the front trac-bar.. is it in the stock hole or did they drill a new hole.. this bar runs from the frame to the passenger side of the axle. If a new hole is there, plan to get a front adj trac-bar soon.
14. Get up to speed 35mph and slam the brake on and see how it stops...of course to this in a safe area... you don't want the brake peddle to ride up and down.. means the rotors might be bad if it does.
Those are off the top of my head...

Damn that is a great price for a 98! Lucky find in my opinion. Hope everything works great on it and no rust.

I have to say dido. From personal experience make sure everything that is advertised on the Jeep is actually on it and working. Bought a 2004 that was advertised with a/c come to find out there wasn't (no pump or nothing!) Got screwed and had to buy after market kit. Good luck, hope everything works out!!

Hey guys! Got the jeep! I'm excited, but just a few problems, so I talked him down to 4700. Shifts good, runs good, just won't shift into 5th gear. Gonna have that looked at. Tonight though, I smelled something and the engine just started squealing REAL loud. We think it might be the a/c clutch. Probably the bearings in it. You guys ever heard this or had it happen to you? How expensive do you think it will be? Thanks for any advice.

That is why the top and doors come off, but seriously... I just picked up a 98 4cylinder in Northwest PA for $3400 and did the usual checks and test drive, but wish I had found this forum first. Rust was normal for any vehicle in this area and age. Interestingly, there was an exhaust leak somewhere between the manifold and the converter that is being taken care of before delivery. POR-15 and Hurculiner here we come.

Do they even come without A/C's? That is wild....

Move to Kentucky 70 degree weather in the summer is really nice and the Winters aint too cold. Sure beats working construction in 105-110 summers. >.<

I don't know about that weather report Levinoss. This has been the mildest summer I have seen. And last winter was pretty damn cold for Ky, lots of ice. I would say move to HI, now there is some all year 70* weather. This summer has been nice though. I do miss the ocean breeze of Orlando, FL, but do not miss the afternoon rain and humidity. I guess I like it here but the people cannot drive to save their lives. (Mindless zombies on their way to Micky D's type of driving, Your not going to get there before I get mine BS).

We have not hit 90 so far this summer? Maybe it's just because im used to 100+ days on end but this is great. I guess I don't understand what you are trying to say? Its low for this year or high?
