All terrain tires (almost finished)

Excellent price. If mechanically sound with no rust I'd definitely pick her up. That'd be well north of 8 grand in my neck of the woods.

Well, there is a lot to look at that your pics do not show. Take a GOOD look underneath. I mean get under there laying on your back and look all underneath it. Poke around with a screw driver on the frame and such. Look at the shocks and springs to make sure they are not rusted out. Do not be fooled by paint or undercoating hiding rust problems. Do not worry to much about surface rust, but more by " cancer" or rot. Check for movement on the tie rods and other steering parts. Take it to a GOOD Jeep mechanic, spend $100.00 on an evaluation. This could save you thousands in repairs later.

Ask for any and all service records too. Get a carfax!!!!

There are threads on here that have a more comprehensive list of things to check. Not to be a D!@k, but use that search engine on here.

That being said, it is a pretty good price if it all checks out.

price seem low. Get a vin check run on it.. check the hell out of the frame, bring something to hit the frame with for rust, pull the carpets.. check the ATF fluid or color and burnt up smell. Should move under its own power on a flat surface in D.

What everyone else above has said. As for the decals a heat gun helps to loosen them up but don't get to hot or you'll damage the paint. Good luck with it if you choose to get it.

Good call having it checked out. New radiator can mean it had been overheated.. still worth 10,000 where I'm at...with a bad motor. Nice find

I spent 15k on mine here in CO and it had some minor things done. $5600 does seem pretty low. Good luck and hope it checks out for you.

Ditto on what everyone else said, I see those going for $10k+ around here.

Stick your finger into an access hole on the frame if you dig out a bunch of silt/mud it'll tell you it's been in some deep stuff. Not necessarily a problem, but you then can suspect that all of your steering components, brakes, tranny have been subjected to that too.

Stick or auto? D44 in the rear or D35? D44 is the better option.

I dont think the previous owner ever took it off road, more of daily driver from what she told me. The body of the car is in great condition last time i went to see it. Today when i take a look, ill have my mechanic look underneath for rust and corrosion. Not sure about the axle but it is automatic (keeper's biggest sin, i apologize)

New radiator......I would be iffy. Do some research on I believe 2000 and newer because if I remember correctly, they are known to get cracks in the head. I ran into a Jeep when I was looking and it overheated and cracked the radiator because of this.
I ended up buying a stock 2001 TJ and it was a few more k than that...I would be nervous that they are hiding something.

the mechanic said everything looked alright, just was a little surprised about the rust underneath (normal for a jeep right). He also said the kick down cable needs to be fixed or replaced, and one ball joint. As of now nothing major.

what do you guys think, take the deal, counter the offer for lower?

rust??? how bad?

"surprised about the rust" sounds pretty bad to me.. especially coming from a guy that works underneath a car for a livein.. i mean unless i read to much into it witch i do a lot its like saying "holy cow i was not expecting this much rust on a jeep that 5k-10k below book"

witch says to me that there is very little that isn't rusted..

wait till you have more buying power IMO

Pics of the rust would be helpful if you can get them. Is it just surface rust? Rusted through?

So, it does not sound like YOU have gotten underneath it yet. I state this, because Jeeps this old and with rust, really need love from it's owner. You will need to be able to get under there and take car of stuff that needs taken care of. Do you have tools to work on stuff and are you willing to work on it? Do you have access to enough money to replace u-joints, ball joints, tie rods, steering gears, and more at a shop if you do not want to work on it yourself? These are the things you will be looking to replace in the future I would bet. If one ball joint is bad, the other is coming right behind it.

Here is a link to my build thread. I have not been building because I have been taking car of the regular service and rust on it. Take a look at it should show you just a little of what you are getting into.

Building Dawg's cage

If the answer to these questions are yes, then go for it, but check that frame for yourself. Look all over it for rot. A bad frame can be hard to see at first, but if it has cancer, it is going to be a real bear for you to fix and is unsafe.

Oh, fuel and brake lines rust through too and will soon need to be replaced I bet. Make sure to check these things.

Sometimes there are great deals out there (which usually last less than 24hrs in the Jeep world), however that statement is very concerning. If he's surprised about the lack of rust, then by all means, BUT if he's surprised over the amount of rust then I would be MOST apprehensive.

Okay so body doesn't have any rust that has rusted through: ie: there are no holes. As for underneath it's more of a rusted look not cancerous. I think the mechanic perhaps said there was a lot of rust because he is used to German cars and higher end cars. I will speak again to him tomorrow and get a more detailed opinion because he was very busy today.

Let's say the rust underneath is only surface rust, what's the best way to remove or sand it down. I've read about sealants and other sprays

^there's the tell......a rusted tub....the frame has to have some serious rust even if it is in a limited area....this TJ needs a very careful inspection from underneath.

thanks everyone for the help, my mechanic told me look for something else with less rust even though it may have a lot more mileage on it. I found an 04 with 220 000 km on it for $5500. this jeep has a lot more mileage but the mechanic said if it has a lot less rust and better treated to go with this, he did seem too concern with mileage but was more concerned with amount of rust, ill keep looking.

how the hell did you find 2 tjs for less then 6k? its only 132k miles. . that agen is a 15k jeep in the states. .and thats for a quick sale as in within hrs of posting the add..

sounds like I need to make a trip to Canada even with curency chang you can make so serious cash flipping them

that dosnt make sense to me at all... assuming this 2nd one is a 4.0 at least. . if its the 2.5 then the price makes sense. . still low but not shockingly low

My 98 was $3k with 179000 miles, with a 4.0, an extra set of wheels and tires, hard top, and soft top frame.

Where do you live that cheap TJs are so hard to find?

not sure why here in Canada they seem to go for a lot less than US, maybe because of our winters, jeepers are hesitant to drive them all year. But i've found lots of 97-04 between 3k-7k

just for the hell of it check out Kijiji Grand Montréal : annonces gratuites dans les catégories emplois, CV, automobiles, appartements, mobilier, rencontres, services, événements, électroménager et plus.
let me know what you think (just dont buy the ones im looking at haha)
