Help choosing the right Jeep...

Hello folks!

I'm new to posting here but have been hanging around for some time now. I am currently looking for a Wrangler. I have wanted one for a long time and I feel the time has come. My question is this: Is there a particular TJ year that I should stay away from? Or is there a year that had the greatest improvements (ex.tranny,chassis, electrical, body, paint etc.) that I should be on the lookout for? I've decided on a 4cyl with a stick. I test drove one after realizing that a 4cyl with a 3 speed auto crawls. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I can't wait to start the endless task of building the perfect rig.

First of all whats your budget? Second what are you gonna do with it? Third why a 4cyl? I use mine as a daily driver, and offroad once in a blue moon. But i did get a 6cyl. I have done that in the past, got a car or truck because it was slightly cheaper but soon realized that i made a poor choice just to save a few bucks. Also if you have a bit more to spend i would go with a rubicon. I bought a sport and wish i would have got the rubi. See what i mean just to save a few bucks. But if you dont plan on putting larger tires or a lift you can go with the 4cyl and be ok, but for a few bucks more why not the 6. One more question, if you dont mind me asking how much is the 4cyl you are looking at and what year is it? The reason i ask is because i got a 2000 tj sport from carmax with 60K miles and a 2 year extended warrenty for 12,000. Not a bad if you ask me. As far as year i would say the newer the better, less wear and tear if you buy used.

As far as what years to stay away from if I was to buy all over again I would make sure to stay away from a 99 or older (Assuming the manifold hasn't been changed) They had issues with the exhaust manifold being crap and cracking on you. It's not too hard to change, but it's a pain in the ass to do it. Other than that they didn't make a whole lot of changes until 03 when they came out with the Rubicon model and I think that's the first year of the 4 speed auto and the 6 speed manual wasn't it? Nothing wrong with any year TJ really. Just some minor junk that would make me look 2000 or new if I was do get another TJ.

yeah 97-99 exhaust manifolds are prone to cracking...and if i was you i would go with a 2000 or newer tj because i think the 2000 and newer ones have the much better NV3550 over the weak AX5 tranny

spend a few buck more and get a 4.0l vs the mighty 2.5. You will thank yourself later. As stated the 97-99 had issue with the manifold.. figure about 200 for the part. Heck check my 97 out its forsale..anyway.. the 2000's did come with a better 5spd but lots of people have gotten very good results with the ax15 and ax5. Certainly nothing like the 87 ba10. they also had the rail ignition system with is nicer.

I would get the newest one you can afford that has what you want on it.

My budget is no higher than 11 grand. I plan on wheeling quite a bit so maybe a 6 is in order. So look for a 2000 or newer and probably better off with a 6 in the long run? Got it. Thanks guys for the info and help. I'll be around here quite a bit once a find the one I'm looking for.

yeah...if you wheel a good bit then the 6 would be better...and yes the 6 would be better and 2000 or newer is good...or new as you can get without blowing the budget...but anything 2000 or newer is good and you should be able to find one in that year range for 11 grand or less...hope ya stick around and good luck on finding the jeep...you'll love it

Not more popular with me...

There's that head light junk again. Amazing!

If we're talkin' about lights, I think the running lights embedded in the TJ fenders is one of the worst features on a Jeep as far as superficial appearances go.

If someone rules out a vehicle because of the shape of a light, then they should keep their Honda to drive to Pottery Barn in.

I am doing the best I can to honor the square headlights. It is the easiest platform to build on. A guy at PSC even tried to get me to change the front grill...........to round headlights.........I told him that would dishonor the best built Jeep to date.

Don't change a thing on that YJ, blu. There's alot of awesome Jeeps on this site, but yours is my fave!

i beg to differ, as i can fit into a tj as opposed to a yj, the steering and seat setup is completely different

since we have deviated from the subject, I'll admit I'm still trying to come up with a gracful entrance/exit with the CJ, it's a tight squeeze (seat & stearing are fixed and people may have just been "smaller" 30 yrs ago)

I was checking around the net, and as fas as I can tell, tilt is standard in a YJ. I could be wrong though. It may have only been an option, but it seems to have been around as early as the 87 model.

The only difference that I have noticed is the seat sits higher than in the TJ. But my 89 has tilt steering, and is always as high as it will go. Even with lowered seats, my head still bangs the roll cage. Short legs, and long body........

Newer the better. Why get a YJ when you can get a TJ. Who cares about the stupid headlights or tilt steering, if you cant fit you cant fit! Most of the guys on this forum only take their jeeps out to play. AsK bluviking. If your like me and drive 45 min. to work, take it to the store, and to run around town you need a newer jeep. Bottom line get what you can afford, with the most options.

ok, blu. is it true? I disagree with that statement myself. Not that it matters, but my opinion is that we have mostly dual-purpose rigs.

This gives me an idea for a poll that I am going to start. I'll post it up tonight or tomorrow. I think we had a poll on jeep usage before, but our membership has grown by leaps and bounds. It'll be interesting to see where it stands now.

I WISH mine looked like blus.

My Jeep only gets driven a couple days a month. I have a company truck for work and I work a lot of hours. I'm mostly working when I am on here. My company laptop is always with me on the job.

My Jeep is neglected. I haven't even put on 2000 miles in the past year and something months. Last time I changed the oil, it had only been driven 400 miles between changes.

Mine looks more like Blu's and I drive it most everyday. Getting ready to step up to 37's and still will drive it everyday. I also wheel the hell out of it whenever I can too. Mine was not DD for awhile, but I've put it back in the game.

But I would say that non daily driven rigs on this particular forum are few and far between. I know of about 6 just off the top of my head and we have way more than just 6 members.

And my bad if Tilt was a standard option on YJ's. Didn't mean to make people scour the web looking to prove me wrong. I just know that a buddy of mine did have a 90YJ with the 4cyl and that bad boy didn't have tilt and always pissed me off trying to get into it.

Tilt must have been an option then. At the very least, in early model YJs.

By the way, I would never try to prove you wrong, Jack. I can always take you for your word. I was just curious of the answer.
