HELP! Gear shift won't change gears!

2005 Jeep Wrangler was driven all day today and after it had been parked in the driveway for an hour I tried to pull it into the garage. It turned on and it will allow me to move the gear shifter but it doesn't lock into gear and just "floats" freely down to first gear location but will not actually shift gears. Please help!

If it is a 2003 or newer with an auto, your shift cable linkage probably popped off at the tranny. It has happened to quite a few with that tranny. Lots of threads on the subject.

Fill out your Jeep profile and people will be able to answer your questions better if they know what you have.

Welcome to the forum.

Auto. It just feels like the shifter isn't attached to anything.

Ok, you filled out your profile. Kind of. At least we know you have a 2005 X, and you do have the 42rle auto tranny. Mine is a 2004 X, and my linkage has not come off yet, but I know what to do if it does.

Another problem with this tranny is the white plastic shift interlock rod that always breaks. I have experienced that one. Easy fix with a chopstick or plastic coat hanger piece cut to length of the broken piece inside shift lever.
